[ 1] The Northern Irish totals do not include the unofficial wartime championships; unofficial doubles were additionally won by Linfield (3), Belfast Celtic (3), and Glentoran (1). [ 2] Includes 1958, when the cup was shared between Al-Ahly and Zamalek. [ 3] The totals for Levski and CSKA contain the Soviet Army cups won in the years no other national cup existed (before 1981). Domestic trebles consist of league, cup, and Soviet Army cup. The totals of Levski, Levski-Spartak and Vitosha have been summed together, likewise for CDNA, CSKA, and CFKA Sredets. Levski's total includes the double of 1942 (league and Tzar's Cup). [ 4] Totals include doubles won in Bohemia, Czechoslovakia, Bohemia and Moravia, and Czech Republic since 1925 (without the Prague region championships before 1925). Sparta won 1 double in Czechoslovakia before WW II, 1 during WW II in the Protectorate Bohemia and Moravia, 3 in Czechoslovakia after WW II and 3 in the Czech Republic since 1993. Slavia won 2 before WW II, 2 during WW II and 2 in the Czech Republic since 1993. The double Slavia defended in 1941/42 concerned the Ceský Pokal. [ 5] The 1988 final was stopped at 1-1 just before the end, after Steaua had left the field as protest to having a goal disallowed. The match was later awarded 2-1 to Steaua, but after the revolution of 1989 Steaua gave the cup to Dinamo. The official records of the Romanian FA still award the cup to Steaua, so, since they also won the league in 1987/88, it is included here as a "double win" for Steaua. [ 6] Total of Jaraaf includes Foyer France. [ 7] Trinidad and Tobago trebles consisted of league, FA Cup and Pro Bowl. [ 8] Indian doubles listed here consist of the I-League (since 1997) and the Federation cup. Doubles involving winning the Calcutta league are not taken into account. In 87 seasons in which both league and cup were played, 18 'doubles' were won. Cup winning Champions Athletic Club won 5 doubles while winning the league 8 times; so they more often combined a cup win with a league title than not; this is explained by the fact that they won the cup 23 times, only six less than record winners Barcelona; in all three seasons in which they won the league but failed to win the cup, they were eliminated from the latter competition by the eventual winners (1933/34 and 1935/36 by Real Madrid, 1982/83 by Barcelona). Stopping the Champions Two teams stopped the league champions from completing the double in the cup final on three occasions: Athletic (1932/33 and 1957/58 against Real Madrid, 1943/44 against Valencia), and Barcelona (1967/68 and 1989/90 against Real Madrid and 1970/71 against Valencia): both twice denied Real Madrid and once Valencia. Revenge of the Runners-Up On five occasions, the league runners-up beat the champions in the cup final; this means that 5 out of 10 times that the champions lost the cup final, they succumbed to the league runners-up, implying a fierce fight between the two teams all season. It happened 1932/33 (Athletic beating Real Madrid in the cup final), 1960/61 (Atlético beating Real Madrid), 1967/68 (Barcelona beating Real Madrid), 1970/71 (Barcelona beating Valencia) and 2010/11 (Real Madrid beating Barcelona). Switching Shadow When Barcelona won their first double, 1951/52, Athletic were league runners-up while Valencia lost the cup final. Next season, Barcelona won the double again, now with Valencia as league runners-up and Athletic as cup final losers. All or Nothing The three teams that most often won the cup while finishing runners-up in the league are Barcelona, Real and Atlético, all on 4 occasions. As Barcelona and Real Madrid both won the cup often and finished runners-up many times, that is not surprising for them, but Atlético won the cup on 'only' 10 occasions while they finished runners-up 8 times. So almost half the times they won the cup, they were second in the league, while exactly half the times they were league runners-up, they consoled themselves with the cup. No regular cup tournament has been held in Argentina though various cup like competitions existed in the past. On those tournaments, we can say that:
a) Competencia, Estímulo, Suecia and Campeonato Nacional cups were the main cups. b) Honor, República, Centenario cups could be computed as league cups. c) Ibarguren and Oro have not been computed because they were played with only 2 participants, so they are as supercups. d) Also, cups played with less than 90 minutes by match have not been computed (Escobar, Asistencia Pública). Under these premisses, the following clubs can be considered to have won league-and-cup doubles in Argentina: Alumni 1907, 1909 Boca Juniors 1919, 1926, 1976 Independiente 1926 River Plate 1932, 1975, 1979 San Lorenzo de Almagro: 1972 Note that winning Apertura and Clausura tournaments in one season is not considered a double win as both are league tournaments.
