The first Dutch Super Cup match was played on June 25, 1949, between champions S.V.V. and Cup winners Quick (Nijmegen), at the Goffert stadium in Nijmegen. This experiment wasn't repeated for more than four decades.
Since 1991 the annual opening of the season. The first five editions were played in the Stadion Feyenoord ("De Kuip") in Rotterdam; from the sixth on in the newly built "Amsterdam ArenA", home stadium of Ajax. Starting from 2017, the league champions host the match. The match features the champions and the cup winners, and since 1996 the trophy played for is officially called the "Johan Cruijff Schaal".
