A league for Cairo was first organised in 1922/23 by the Cairo Football Board, under the name Cairo Zone Competition. In 1938, the Egypt FA took over the organisation, together with three other regional leagues (Alexandria (organised between 1926 and 1953), Bahary (for Upper Egypt) and Canal (organised between 1927 and 1948, won by Al-Masry in its final season 1947/48)). From 1948 to 1953 the Cairo League was held in parallel with the new nationwide league championship (i.e., results in the nationwide league between Cairo clubs also counted for the city league) before being discontinued (it was held once more in 1957/58 but then stopped again).
