Liga Veracruzana Champions 1915-1943
The game of football was introduced in Mexico by the English workers at the mines and the railroads. The first championship was organized in 1902 in Mexico City with five teams: British Club, Mexico Cricket Club, Orizaba Charleston, Pachuca and Reforma Club. This was the seed of what later became the Primera Fuerza. This league was based mainly in Mexico City. There were other leagues, like the Liga de Occidente (Western League) and the Liga Veracruzana, but the Primera Fuerza was considered the strongest and its champions were regarded as national champions.

In 1943 the Liga Mayor was founded with 10 members, it was the first professional league and a truly national league. Founders were América, Asturias, Atlante, España, Marte and Moctezuma from the former Primera Fuerza, Atlas and Guadalajara from the Liga de Occidente and A.D. Orizabeño and Veracruz from the Liga Veracruzana. In the next 2 years 6 new members were accepted: Oro, León and Puebla for 1944-45 and Monterrey, Tampico and San Sebastian for 1945-46. In 1950 a Second Division was founded and the Liga Mayor became the First Division. The Championship was decided by the regular season points table until 1970. From 1970-71 it has been decided by the winner of a Championship Playoff.

(1) These seasons finished with two clubs with the same points tied for first place, so a tie breaker playoff game was staged. (2) These were shorter championships played before or after the 1970 and 1986 World Cup finals but they are counted as league championships. (3) This season the 4 clubs played a final group for the Championship and the winner was the one with the most points in it.
