Compared to the first official Olympic football tournament four years earlier, the number
of participants doubled: whereas in 1908, five countries
fielded six sides, this time eleven countries showed up with a team. Luxembourg,
Portugal and Switzerland were the only European member federations of F.I.F.A. to
decline entry (the membership of the Liga Portuguesa de Football lasted barely a
season: after provisional admission in November 1909 and official affiliation in
May 1910 it was presumed dissolved at the Dresden congress in June 1911; it was
succeeded by the União Portuguesa de Futebol, later renamed F.P.F., which was
provisionally admitted in August 1914); however, provisional members Russia (who
together with Argentina were
accepted as new members at the F.I.F.A. congress held on 30 June and 1 July during
the tournament; South Africa, the first non-European members, had already joined
provisionally in 1909 and formally in 1910), did enter, as did Finland, then an
autonomous grand duchy within the Russian Empire; as Finland had been admitted
as F.I.F.A. members four years before, in June 1908 (after provisional admission
in November 1907), it was stated explicitly at Russia's admission that the rule of
the Russian football federation was restricted to the European part of the Russian
Empire without Finland.
Belgium registered by 29 May but withdrew a week later, two weeks before the draw,
because they felt they could not field a sufficiently strong side after a number
of players had declined to travel to Sweden (a concern shared by the Dutch, who also
considered withdrawing after several first choice players had declared themselves
unavailable – but eventually it was felt that as winners of the bronze medals
four years ago, the country had a moral obligation to be present again) and France
backed out a few days after the draw on 18 June.
In addition, the Bohemian football association (which in 1909 had been a co-founder
of the U.I.A.F.A., and had won its 1911
"Grand European Tournament" in Roubaix)
had requested permission to take part
in the tournament, but was denied entry as it was not affiliated to F.I.F.A. anymore
(having being forced out at the F.I.F.A. congress in Vienna in June 1908, after two
years of provisional membership).
As four years before, the regulations for the Olympic football tournament allowed each I.O.C. member to register four teams; however, at its 1911 congress in Dresden, the F.I.F.A. considered each of its members should only submit one team; the reference to four teams only served to allow the United Kingdom to be represented by each of its four national football federations. Nevertheless, in May 1912 Germany, Hungary and Norway all announced they intended to enter the football tournament with two teams, but after being reminded of the Dresden agreement, they withdrew their second side. (Russia apparently had also considered entering two separate sides, one consisting of Moscow and the other of Saint Petersburg players.) The United Kingdom also entered only one team, which like in 1908 was an all-English (amateur) side.
Another similarity with the tournament in London was the medal distribution: the United Kingdom defeated Denmark in the final while the Netherlands finished third. Also as four years before, the teams eliminated in the first two knock-out rounds entered a consolation tournament, this time to designate fifth place (in London, it had been for third place). For additional information, see below.
In marked contrast to the 1908 tournament, there were many exciting matches: whereas
four years earlier only the final and the consolation match between the Netherlands
and Sweden had not been utterly one-sided affairs, this time most matches in the
tournament proper were quite competitive, with only Denmark and the United Kingdom
running up the score to seven in their quarter-final ties before the Netherlands set
a record for an Olympic medal match in football by humiliating Finland 9-0 (which
remained the highest ever win for the Dutch national side for more than 99 years).
And while the consolation tournament featured the worst ever rout in Olympic
football history (Germany scoring sixteen unanswered goals against Russia before
taking it easy in the last twenty minutes), its final, the
twentieth ever derby match between Austria and Hungary,
was one of the better matches (and by far the most passionately contested) played
that week.
As in London four years earlier,
the 1912 Olympic football tournament consisted of two parts.
The Olympic medals were decided by a straight knock-out tournament, with (unlike
four years before) an additional bronze medal match between the losing
semi-finalists. As losers of the bronze medal match, Finland were awarded
silver medals of the Swedish Football Association.
In order to prevent that teams would travel to Sweden to play but a single match,
all teams eliminated before the semi-final stage, seven in all, had the opportunity
to enter the consolation series, which again was played in knock-out format.
(Even the United Kingdom had registered its team for this series in the unlikely
event of early elimination.)
Its winners, Hungary, considered to have finished fifth, were awarded silver
medals of the Swedish Football Association, like Finland, while losing
finalists Austria received bronze medals of the Swedish Football Association.
Three venues were used: the new Stadion, built for the occasion, as well as grounds
in Traneberg (then home to Djurgårdens IF) and Solna (jointly owned by the Swedish
football federation and Vikingarnas FK; in 1937, the Råsundastadion, home of AIK,
was built on the same site).
A fourth ground, the Östermalms idrottsplats close to the Stadion, was not
used for any Olympic football matches but hosted the Olympic tennis tournament
as well as a friendly between Norway and Russia. Judging
from Russian reports on that match, it did not have a grass pitch but one of
"sea gravel" (morskoy graviy). It was also used for training purposes.
The Stadion was built at the site of the existing Stockholms idrottspark ("Athletic
Park"), which it replaced; according to the original plans, it was to have a 32,000
capacity, but this was considered unnecessarily high for later use and reduced
to 22,000 (official report, p. 186), of
which 3,050 on a temporary north stand which
was removed after the Games. Only the final came close to filling it to capacity,
but due to its moderate size also smaller crowds created an atmosphere favourably
compared to that in London four years earlier.
The other two grounds both provided accommodation on one side only and probably
held just a few thousand spectators (the grandstand at Råsunda held 1,300;
the final of the 1916 Svenska Spelen
between Stockholm and Göteborg played there four years later was attended
by 9,000, presumably a sell-out crowd).
The football field in the Stadion did not meet the size requirements as stipulated in
the Olympic rules (which required a width of 75 yards, or 68.58 metres) but two days
before the start of the tournament, all delegation leaders agreed to renounce on any
protests regarding the dimensions of the ground (which did comply with F.I.F.A.
regulations, which only required a width of 65 metres). As an aside, note
Buschmann and Lennarts ([BuL (Band 2)], p. 41)
mistakenly claim it was the Råsunda ground which did not fulfil the
requirements, but both the official report (p. 482)
and contemporary press articles clearly locate the problem at the Stadion. At
least they only made two errors in identifying
match venues (for the matches between England and Hungary as well as between Austria
and Italy), only half as many as the IFFHS, which
additionally mislocated the matches of the Netherlands against both Denmark and Finland
and invented a non-existent fourth venue (the "Djurgården
Stadion", apparently a confusion with the Traneberg ground – which most definitely
did not qualify as a stadium), cf. [IFF 00 (Band 1)],
which also supplied an anachronistic name for
the 1908 venue and included yet another
non-existing stadium for the 1920 tournament.
These factual errors are rather puzzling as all match venues are given correctly in
the official report and could easily have
been confirmed by checking contemporary papers.

Olympic Football Tournament | Consolation Tournament | Friendlies OLYMPIC FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT NB: Apart from the 11 countries which eventually entered, also Belgium and France registered ahead of the tournament. Belgium withdrew before the draw on 18 June (their withdrawal was announced in the newspapers on 6 June so presumably the decision was taken one day earlier); France were to play Norway but withdrew on 21 June. Note that the official report of the Olympic Games recorded paying attendants by stadium and match day; as there were three double-headers (on 30 June and 1 July at Råsunda and on 2 July at the Stadium), for six matches no specific number of paying attendants is available; attendances indicated in press reports are often much higher (usually about double); some attendance figures listed in modern sources are plainly invented. The official report did not always include the goal scorers and minutes; whenever it did specify them, the details below either follow it or indicate the difference; as other sources (contemporary press reports or later overviews published in the participating countries) often differ considerably on both scorers and goal minutes, the exact truth on some of them will never be known. First Round 29 June 1912 NORWAY won by walk-over. FRANCE withdrew on 21 June, before venue and referee of the match had been determined. 29 June 1912 - Idrottsplats, Traneberg - Att: 600 (paying: 231) Ref: Hugo Meisl (Aut) - Lin: S. NB: date, venue and referee as published in the Dagens Nyheter of 6 July, which explicitly stated this friendly had been played the day before, as did the Tidning för Idrott of the same day, giving the same details; match considered official by Russia (at least since 1994) but never by Norway; a Russian source, now disappeared but still available thanks to the Wayback Machine, which gives the date as 3 July, the venue as Traneberg, and the referee as George Bayness (a British member of the Russian delegation), claims this match was first fixtured to determine a replacement for Hungary in the consolation tournament, as the Magyars supposedly had decided not to participate, only to change their mind on the morning of 3 July; apart from being in contradiction with the press reports in the Dagens Nyheter and the Tidning för Idrott (which both also described the lunch after the match offered by the Norwegian FA to the representatives of Russia and Hungary), that is highly improbable as the match between Hungary and Germany was announced in the morning papers of that day, and it is most bewildering why in that case Sweden were not considered instead of Russia – after all, nobody could have had any interest whatsoever in a repeat of the Germany-Russia farce two days earlier; finally, the same source, in its transparent attempt to rewrite Olympic history (based of the memoirs of L. Smirnov, published after World War II), is uncertain of the Russian line-up, saying it was also reported Uverskiy, Nikitin and S. Filippov played instead of Akimov, A. Filippov and L. Smirnov; another Russian source lists date, venue and referee correctly. 5 July 1912 - Råsunda idrottsplats, Solna Ref: Ede Herczog (Hun) STOCKHOLM XI 3 (Ekrodt 3, Svensson 13, Berg 66) GÖTEBORG XI 4 (Myhrberg 6, Fagrell 22, Johansson 65, Törnqvist 83) HT: 2-2 Stockholm: Her. Bergström, Sandberg, Törnqvist - Myhrberg, Johansson, Börjesson, Fagrell, G. Lundin. NB: match played immediately before the final of the consolation tournament between Hungary and Austria; this was the second match Herczog refereed that day, after the morning match between Norway and Russia. 12 July 1912 - Pole Sokol'nicheskogo kluba sporta, Moskva - Att: 3,000 Ref: George Bayness (Eng) MOSCOW LEAGUE XI 0 HUNGARY 9 (Pataki 10, 44, 50, 77pen, Schlosser 42, 59, Kertész II 48, 54, 84) Moscow League: Favorskiy - Parker, De Rimsha - Akimov, Newman, Vozdvizhenskiy - M. Smirnov, Sysoev, Charnock (cap), Lunn, Thomas. Hungary: Zsák - Rumbold, Révész - Bíró, Vagó, Blum - Sebestyén, Kertész II, Pataki, Schlosser (cap), Borbás. NB: Parker, Newman, Charnock, Lunn and Thomas were Britons active for Moscow clubs; Favorskiy retired injured in the 85th minute and Thomas took his place in goal; this match is considered an official international by Hungary but not by Russia. 14 July 1912 - Pole Sokol'nicheskogo kluba sporta, Moskva - Att: 3,000 Ref: Aleksandr Shults (Rus) RUSSIA 0 HUNGARY 12 (Kertész II 17, 36, 64, Schlosser 39, 50, 69, 71, 90, Pataki 65, 73, Tóth Potya 79, Bródy 86) Russia: Matrin - Sokolov (cap), De Rimsha - Uverskiy, Khromov, Kynin - Suvorov, Sorokin, Butusov, Zhitarev, L. Austria | Denmark | Finland | France | Germany | Hungary | Italy | Netherlands | Norway | Russia | Sweden | United Kingdom (England) NB: each team could register up to 33 players; only Great Britain, Hungary and Sweden did so (while Denmark (30) and the Netherlands (31) came close), but of course the actual squads travelling to Sweden were (much) smaller; most countries had split their registered players into a first eleven and reserve players (only Austria, the Netherlands, Russia and Sweden did not do so); these are indicated below following [Ugg 12]; Pos = Position (GK = Goalkeeper; DF = Defender; MF = Midfielder; FW = Forward); tr. = Trainer; the part of the Full Name used in the Match Details section is given in bold face; DoB = Date of Birth; DoD = Date of Death; Club refers to that at which player was active in the 1911/12 season; Caps and Goals refer to full international matches in entire career (does not include matches for the England Amateur side); additions and corrections are welcome. The organising committee had not invited any international referees but had left it
to the discretion of the participating countries to bring some – at their own cost,
cf. [BuL (Band 2)], p. 39.
Thus, several referees were chosen from among the participants at the F.I.F.A. congress
held simultaneously in Stockholm:
Meisl, delegated by the Austrian federation, Philip, the manager of Aberdeen F.C.,
sent by the Scottish F.A., and Simmons, who curiously represented Ireland at the
congress; while all three had refereeing experience, neither Briton had recently been
in charge of an important official match, and both were heavily criticised for their
performance (Simmons was considered to have favoured Sweden against the Netherlands,
Philip to have disadvantaged Austria against the same opponents).
Apart from Herczog, the Hungarian trainer and like Meisl an experienced referee, the
only foreign referees of repute present were Dutch (Groothoff, Meerum Terwogt, both
also professionally in Stockholm, as newspaper reporters, and Willing); thus, most of
the matches not involving the Netherlands (8 out of 13) were refereed by Dutchmen.
All linesmen in the tournament proper were Swedish.
