Note that this list includes all clubs mentioned in this document, including a
number of foreign ones, but is not necessarily exhaustive.
The short versions of the names on the left hand side are used in this
document; an additional indication of the home town is only included if
a homonymous club from another town appears in the document as well.
The full names on the right hand side appeared at least once in contemporary
publications but for most clubs other
versions appeared as well: in particular, the words "voetbal" and "football"
as well as "vereeniging" and "club" were often interchanged, sometimes
apparently at random, and while nearly all early Dutch football clubs
originated from an older cricket club, the "cricket" part was not always
included in the name.
Additional information is most welcome.
All clubs in italics were members of the N.V.(A.)B. at least at some point during the season.

At an extraordinary general meeting on Sep 1, 1895 at the Hôtel "l'Europe", Vreeburg,
Utrecht, several changes in the regulations were approved, most importantly about
the formation of a Dagelijksch Bestuur (executive committee), to consist
of five members, appointed by the existing Bestuur (board, henceforth also
referred to as Algemeen Bestuur), to deal with day-to-day affairs.
After that, a letter from one of the member clubs,
A.A.C., complaining about the lack of athletics events financed by the
federation and threatening to leave the N.V.A.B., was discussed. As a result,
J.C. Schröder formulated the following proposal, to be decided upon at
the ordinary general meeting four weeks later:
"De Buitengewone Algemeene Vergadering van den Nederlandsche Voetbal en
Athletiek Bond, vergaderd te Utrecht, den 1sten September 1895, spreekt als
hare gevoelens uit, dat het noodzakelijk is, voortaan den Nederlandsche
Voetbal en Athletiek Bond alleen te noemen Nederlandsche Voetbal Bond, dus
eene radicale scheiding in het leven te roepen tusschen Voetbal en Athletiek."
That motion was accepted (by 23 votes to 6) at the general meeting on Sep 29, 1895
at café "de Vriendschap", Keistraat, Utrecht. Therefore, after this meeting
the federation is officially called N.V.B. (Nederlandsche Voetbal Bond).
At the general meeting concluding the season, on May 17, 1896, at café "Rapp",
Mariaplaats, Utrecht, a motion of censure was tabled by Haarlem against the
N.V.B. board because of the way the conclusion of the Tweede Klasse competition
had been handled by the Algemeen Bestuur three weeks earlier;
after prolonged discussions this motion was rejected overwhelmingly (36 votes
against, 2 in favour, 15 abstentions). Possibly Haarlem's persistent pressure
to gain admittance to the Eerste Klasse in previous seasons in spite of
not fulfilling the requirements had earned them little sympathy – in this
case, at least, they had valid grounds for complaint, the board having hidden
behind a supposed confusion between the intentions of the Dagelijksch Bestuur
and the Algemeen Bestuur to replace the (unfair and badly formulated)
rules by an ad hoc arrangement. (Note that all five members of
the Dagelijksch Bestuur also belonged to the Algemeen Bestuur.)
It certainly did not help Haarlem's cause that both team
captain Smit and club secretary Gerth van Wijk had openly admitted, in
letters published in the "Nederlandsche Sport" on Apr 18, 1896, that Haarlem
had wilfully distorted the competition, by stating, to illustrate the fact that
Haarlem had been aware that the group matches would not count for the final
(Gerth van Wijk) – that must have left a sour taste at Volharding,
who would have qualified for the final stage had Haarlem won its last two
group matches against U.n.I.
After that, several proposals were discussed to adapt the procedures to
obtain membership of the Eerste and Tweede Klasse, as the existing
regulations would in time lead to a steady increase. Wurfbain suggested to
have the top two teams of the Tweede Klasse meet the bottom two of
the Eerste Klasse, with only the winners of such test matches entering
the Eerste Klasse in the next season. Van IJzeren proposed to
introduce admission matches for the Tweede Klasse, with candidate
clubs having to challenge an existing member club, which collected at
least three points during the season, and only gaining entry in case
of a win or two draws against that club.
While the proposal of Van IJzeren was rejected, discussion of the motion
by Wurfbain was deferred until after Aug 1, 1896, when a commission, formed
to formulate a new competition set-up, was to have made suggestions.

The nine clubs who registered for the Tweede Klasse were divided over two groups, a northern one with the four clubs from Amersfoort, Amsterdam and Haarlem, and a southern one with the five clubs from Den Haag and Rotterdam; the top two of both groups qualified for a final group in which clubs were to meet those of the other group twice, each thus playing four matches. At a meeting of het Algemeen Bestuur on Apr 29 in Utrecht, attended by 8 members (F.H. van Leeuwen, O. de Bordes, J. Warner, L.J. Wijnands, F. Borst, Ch.J. Engelberts, J.C. Schröder and M.A. Wolfson), the protest of H.B.S. against Haarlem being awarded the championship of the Tweede Klasse was discussed; after a motion, stating that het Algemeen Bestuur had not been certain about the regulations suggested by het Dagelijksch Bestuur, had been accepted (by 5 votes to 3 – against: De Bordes, Warner, Wijnands; those three, together with president Van Leeuwen, were part of both the Dagelijksch and the Algemeen Bestuur), five suggestions to deal with the situation were made, after it had been agreed there was insufficient time to complete the final competition properly by fixturing two more matches between Haarlem and U.n.I. as well as between Celeritas and H.B.S.: a (Engelberts): declare no champions and allow both Haarlem and H.B.S. to play a promotion match; b (Warner): play two more matches, one between Haarlem and U.n.I. and one between Celeritas and H.B.S., hosts of both to be drawn by lots, and add the results to the standings; c (Borst-Wolfson): a decider between Haarlem and H.B.S. at a neutral venue; d (Van Leeuwen): declare H.B.S. to be the champions; e (Wijnands-1): retain the original regulations (i.e. Haarlem are champions). As suggestion a might have led to two additional clubs in the Eerste Klasse, it was rejected immediately by 7 votes to 1 (Engelberts) and replaced by: f (Wijnands-2): declare no champions and thus have no promotion match played. Then, after Engelberts had left the meeting, the five suggestions b-f were voted upon, in the following order: (d): rejected by 4 votes to 3 (Van Leeuwen, Wolfson, Wijnands); (e): rejected by 6 votes to 1 (Van Leeuwen); (f): rejected by 5 votes to 2 (Van Leeuwen, Wijnands); (c): rejected by 5 votes to 2 (Borst, Wolfson); (b): accepted by 5 votes to 2 (Van Leeuwen, Wijnands). Then, the venues for the two additional matches were drawn, and fixtured for the following Sunday in Haarlem and Rotterdam. [May 3, 1986; Haarlem] Haarlem 1-2 U.n.I. As in the previous season,
the "third competition" was played in districts.
As all clubs from the western provinces (Noord-Holland and Zuid-Holland)
either registered for the Tweede Klasse or entered a city league (or both),
only three groups were formed, one each for the provinces of Gelderland and
Overijssel and one for the three northern provinces (each contributing one
club).
Note that, as in the previous two seasons, this competition was
explicitly not called "Derde Klasse" (all clubs not
belonging to the Eerste Klasse were entitled to enter
the Tweede Klasse).

In addition to the three local federations formed in
the previous season
(Amsterdam, Den Haag and Rotterdam), a new city federation was formed in
December 1895 in Haarlem, the fourth major footballing centre in Holland,
by five local clubs: Haarlem, H.F.C., Ripperda, Sophiadal and Unitas.
One month earlier, the formation of a local federation had been discussed
in Arnhem as well, but that appears to have led to nothing. In contrast,
three clubs from the northern province of Frisia played out a regional
league, albeit apparently without establishing a formal federation.
At the beginning of the season, the Haagsche Voetbal Bond consulted
the N.V.B. about the inclusion of clubs from the neighbouring towns
of Delft (Concordia) and Leiden (Ajax). The national federation
disapproved of the idea, but the H.V.B. ignored that and went ahead
regardless, in spite of the fact that Delft had no suitable ground
and thus Concordia had to play all matches away.
Partially because of those additional entries, the H.V.B. introduced
a Tweede Klasse, as did the A.V.B. in Amsterdam. In contrast,
the R.V.B. league was contested by three teams only, two of them also
active in the southern section of the national second class.
