Note that this list includes all clubs mentioned in this document, including a
number of foreign ones, but is not necessarily exhaustive.
The short versions of the names on the left hand side are used in this
document; an additional indication of the home town is only included if
a homonymous club from another town appears in the document as well.
The full names on the right hand side appeared at least once in contemporary
publications but for most clubs other
versions appeared as well: in particular, the words "voetbal" and "football"
as well as "vereeniging" and "club" were often interchanged, sometimes
apparently at random, and while nearly all early Dutch football clubs
originated from an older cricket club, the "cricket" part was not always
included in the name.
Additional information is most welcome.
All clubs in italics were members of the N.V.A.B. at least at some point during the season.

At the board meeting on Aug 4, 1894, eerste secretaris L.J. Wijnands suggested
to set up the "Derde Competitie" districtwise, so that new members such as
Voorwaarts, who were based in Tiel, could enter without having to travel to Amsterdam
or Rotterdam. He argued against a division by provinces (as used in
the Tweede Klasse in 1890/91, which had been played
in knock-out format). His suggestion was approved unanimously, also in view of the
fact that several clubs from the eastern provinces had either joined the N.V.A.B.
recently (at the time, Voorwaarts and Quick from Nijmegen) or expressed an
interest in doing so. R. Schut, the tweede secretaris, then proposed to let
the various district champions meet each other for the overall title, but given
the financial and logistical problems that might have entailed, it was decided to
leave arranging such matches to the clubs in question, on a voluntary basis, with
support from the N.V.A.B. if required; all district champions were to be awarded
a silver medal.
At the same meeting a request of Haarlem to be admitted to Eerste Klasse was
refused, as approving such a request was against the regulations and there were no
grounds for it whatsoever ("er hoegenaamd geen reden voor is").
On Sep 30, 1894, Haarlem repeated their promotion petition at the annual general
meeting, held at café "Rapp", Mariaplaats, in Utrecht, but predictably the vote
went against them (3 in favour, 13 against, 10 abstentions).
Thus, Haarlem had to settle for their fifth successive season in
the Tweede Klasse. They were the only club from the previous season to
enter it, promoted Rapiditas being replaced by relegated city rivals Victoria while
the Gooi-Hercules merger was dissolved (newly founded Hilversum club 't Gooi
joined the N.V.A.B. at the start of the season and Utrecht-based Hercules
remained members, but both sat out the season) and Quick, who had been a fixture of
the Tweede Klasse in each of the previous three seasons in spite of only once
completing their fixtures, withdrew. Replacing Quick were two other clubs from
the capital, Olympia (who seamlessly joined the time-honoured
Amsterdam tradition of absconding during the season) and U.n.I.; in addition
Kralingen, the winners of the Derde Competitie
in 1893/94, decided to join (note they were not promoted – any member club
of the N.V.A.B. was entitled to enter the Tweede Klasse competition).
At the board meeting one week later, on Oct 6, 1894, in Amsterdam, the new set-up of
the Derde Competitie was decided, with sixteen clubs divided over five
districts (Z.A.C. of Zwolle were included in both the eastern district (a) and
the northern district (c), in order to provide new members Frisia of Leeuwarden
with some competitive matches).
Also during October, clubs from Den Haag and Amsterdam set
up local federations, who started their own leagues at the
end of that month; Rotterdam followed suit in November (the new R.V.B. league
might in fact be seen as a continuation of
the 1893/94 Derde Competitie).
On May 12, 1895, at the general meeting held at café "Rapp", Mariaplaats, in Utrecht, there was yet another vote on the promotion of Haarlem, who had finished runners-up in the Tweede Klasse for the second season in succession, but after some discussion this was again rejected (6 votes in favour, 19 against, 31 abstentions). Their three defeats during the season against Eerste Klasse opposition (H.V.V., H.F.C. and Rapiditas) had done nothing to strengthen their (legally inexistent) case.

Note that the above final table is correct with respect to the actual match results, the rulings on protests, and the regulations on teams withdrawing during the season as valid at the time. However, it was never published by the N.V.A.B., or indeed by anyone else (until the publication of this file in September 2023). Instead, the eerste secretaris of the N.V.A.B., L.J. Wijnands, published (incorrect) final tables in the "Nederlandsche Sport" on Apr 27, 1895, and, revoking the first one, on May 11, 1895; however, the latter failed to take the ruling on the protest of Kralingen on their match on Nov 18, 1894 against Haarlem into account, and both tables failed to follow the existing rules on withdrawn clubs (cf. the explanations following the relevant tables below). [*2] the goal record for Olympia should have read 4-30. NB: note that the above table (correctly) includes the result of the match Kralingen-Haarlem (played Nov 18) as a 1-1 draw; also note that it shows an imperfect mastery of the art of arithmetic, which reappears in standings published later (in particular on May 11). [Mar 24, 1895; Rotterdam] Olympia awd Victoria R. [awarded 0-5, Kralingen forfeited] [as Kralingen had forfeited days ahead of the match, Victoria instead played Rapiditas in their promotion match on this day] In the Apr 27 issue of the "Nederlandsche Sport", the eerste secretaris of the N.V.A.B., L.J. Wijnands, announced that Kralingen and Olympia had withdrawn from the Tweede Klasse, and published the following final standings, in which all results of Kralingen and Olympia (who were being dissolved) had been deleted: 1.Victoria (Rotterdam) 4 3 0 1 18- 5 6 [g.a.: 3.60] 2.Haarlem 4 3 0 1 10- 8 6 [g.a.: 1.25] 3.U.n.I. (Amsterdam) 4 0 0 4 5-20 0 Based on these standings, which were also given in [BNS -] (Part 1), Victoria were proclaimed champions. However, both Kralingen and Olympia had played all other clubs at least once, so their first results against each of them should have been included, and therefore the standings should have read: 1.Victoria (Rotterdam) 6 5 0 1 29- 6 10 2.Haarlem 6 4 1 1 15- 9 9 3.U.n.I. (Amsterdam) 6 2 0 4 18-24 4 -.Kralingen (Rotterdam) 4 1 1 2 12-17 3 -.Olympia (Amsterdam) 4 0 0 4 2-20 0 Of course, Victoria were champions regardless (and had already played and won their promotion match against Rapiditas on Apr 21). Presumably because of that and the fact that they were revised two weeks later, the published standings were never challenged. [Apr 28, 1895; Rotterdam] Kralingen n/p Olympia [Olympia withdrew] At this point, in the May 11 issue of the "Nederlandsche Sport", Wijnands wrote Kralingen had in fact not withdrawn (but had forfeited the last match against Victoria), and published the following final standings, in which all results of Kralingen had been added again – but incorrectly so (the fact that Wijnands had taken over the administration of the Tweede Klasse from R. Schut, who withdrew from his position as tweede secretaris during the season, may partially explain the confusion): 1.Victoria (Rotterdam) 6 5 0 1 31- 6 10 [g.a.: 5.17] 2.Haarlem 6 5 0 1 16-11 10 [g.a.: 1.45] 3.U.n.I. (Amsterdam) 6 1 1 4 14-24 3 4.Kralingen (Rotterdam) 6 0 1 5 8-28 1 The above standings were reproduced at the Voetbalkroniek site (except that there, Kralingen were credited with the incredible number of 85 goals scored until a correction in January 2024). As Kralingen had drawn their first match with Haarlem (albeit after protest), the above standings are clearly wrong; the standings without the results from Olympia should in fact have read: 1.Victoria (Rotterdam) 6 5 0 1 31- 6 10 2.Haarlem 6 4 1 1 15-11 9 3.U.n.I. (Amsterdam) 6 1 1 4 15-24 3 4.Kralingen (Rotterdam) 6 0 2 4 8-28 2 Again, as the season was long over and Victoria had been declared champions and promoted, no complaints were lodged against the standings published on May 11. However, those standings were not only, again, arithmetically incorrect; they also were contrary to the regulations on clubs withdrawing during the season, cf. the final tables in Afdeeling 2 and Afdeeling 3 of the Districtcompetities and that of the R.V.B., where the rules were applied correctly. As Olympia had played all other clubs at least once, their first result against each of them should have been included and thus we can here, after over 128 years, present the correct final table for the first time ever. Final Table: 1.Victoria (Rotterdam) 7 6 0 1 34- 6 12 Promotion Match 2.Haarlem 7 5 1 1 19-11 11 3.U.n.I. Given the success of both the Derde Competitie and the Oostelijke Competitie in the previous season, and the influx of new member clubs during the summer break, it was decided to play the "third competition" in districts. Note that, like in the 1893/94 season, this competition was explicitly not called "Derde Klasse". At a board meeting on Oct 6, 1894, five groups were agreed upon, as follows:

Zutphania, U.D.; b: Vitesse, Get-on, Voorwaarts, Quick (Nijmegen), Victoria (Den Bosch); c: Z.A.C., Frisia; d: Excelsior (Rotterdam), Celeritas (Rotterdam), Leonidas; e: Batavia, Neptunus, L.V.V. The winners of districts d and e were to meet over two legs to establish an overall "western" winner; note that Z.A.C. entered both districts a and c.During the season, district b became known as "Afdeeling 1", district e as "Afdeeling 2" and district d as "Afdeeling 3" (the rationale behind this particular permutation has been lost in time), whereas districts a and c (which overlapped and thus could not properly be described as "divisions") were referred to as "Oostelijke competitie" and "Noordelijke competitie" respectively. These are also the denominations used below. In spite of the apparent lack of uniformity in their names, all five competitions were of equal status (and in no way part of a league hierarchy).

After the proposal by Louis van Rooy to let reserve sides of Eerste Klasse clubs
enter the Tweede Klasse had been rejected at the start of the previous season,
R.A.P. invited other Amsterdam football clubs (Quick, A.A.C., U.n.I., Volharding
and Olympia) to a meeting on Sep 29, 1894, at which the foundation of a football
federation for Amsterdam was approved; the A.V.B. (Amsterdamsche Voetbal Bond)
was founded formally on Oct 17, 1894. Two weeks earlier, on Oct 1, 1894, clubs
from Den Haag had already established the H.V.B. (Haagsche Voetbal Bond), and on
the initiative of Sparta, Rotterdam followed suit: on Nov 21, 1894, the R.V.B.
(Rotterdamsche Voetbal Bond) came into existence.
All three new city federations introduced a local
league, although only one Eerste Klasse side (Sparta) made serious use of this
new possibility for the reserve side to play competitive matches; H.V.V. withdrew
their reserves from the H.V.B. League before they had played a match (however,
at the end of the season H.V.V.'s first team challenged a
selection of the H.V.B. clubs), and R.A.P.'s reserve side forfeited half its matches.

Overeijnder, the secretaris of the R.V.B., published a final standings (omitting the withdrawn clubs) with different goal records for Sparta II (33-9) and Leonidas (20-29); the discrepancies are due to a highly arbitrary decision by the board of the R.V.B. to "average" the results of the first and second matches between Sparta II and Rapiditas II (5-0 and 14-0 being rounded to 9-0) as well as Leonidas and Excelsior (3-1 and 11-0 being rounded to 7-1); by this peculiar bit of arithmetic Sparta II would have won the medal offered by N.V.A.B. president F.H. van Leeuwen for the club with the best goal average; however, at the R.V.B. meeting on May 15 at which Sparta were to be handed this medal that decision was overturned by a majority of the clubs and in spite of strong opposition from the board Celeritas were allocated the medal (43:12=3.58; 29:9=3.22; 33:9=3.67), in line with the existing N.V.A.B. regulations on withdrawn clubs. In June 1894 the "British Continentals" suggested the foundation of
an "International Sporting Association"; those interested were to contact
Mr. Fred. Manning, 76 Strand, London WC. In November 1894, that association
reportedly had ten member clubs, most of them dominated by British ex-pats:
four in Paris (White Rovers, Standard A.C., Stade Français and Inter-Nos),
four in Berlin (Berlin C.C., English F.C., Academic Sport Club and Excelsior),
and one each in Copenhagen (K.B.) and in Karlsruhe (Karlsruhe Kickers, a
short-lived split-off of the Karlsruher F.V. adorning itself with the epithet
"Meistermannschaft des Continents" in true Baron von Münchhausen
spirit and supposedly responsible for the later and somewhat – to the
ears of native Dutch speakers – amusing abundance of football clubs
named "Kickers" in southern Germany (e.g. Offenbach,
Stuttgart, Würzburg) – Up the Frogs!).
Apparently none of the "British" sports clubs in Belgium had cared to join
this "International Sporting Association" but three of them expressed interest
in playing friendlies with clubs from Rotterdam. Victoria arranged five
international matches: two meetings with both F.C. Liégeois (away on Jan 6 and
at home on Feb 24) and Antwerp F.C. (away on Dec 9 and at home on Mar 17) as
well as one with Brussels F.A. (on Feb 3 in Rotterdam), but for a variety of
reasons, four of these five matches did not take place. Likewise, Sparta's
intended home match against F.C. Liégeois on Jan 27 was cancelled, as was
their match against Friesland A.C. from New York, which had been announced
for Jan 13 in Rotterdam only to be called off by the visitors two days
before the game.
However, both Sparta and Victoria (now a Tweede Klasse club) travelled
to the Scheldestad and returned home victorious, thus resuming the
tradition of Maasstad victories which had so rudely been interrupted
in the 1893/94 season.
