Note that this list includes all clubs mentioned in this document, including a
number of foreign ones, but is not necessarily exhaustive.
The short versions of the names on the left hand side are used in this
document; an additional indication of the home town is only included if
a homonymous club from another town appears in the document as well.
The full names on the right hand side appeared at least once in contemporary
publications but for most clubs other
versions appeared as well: in particular, the words "voetbal" and "football"
as well as "vereeniging" and "club" were often interchanged, sometimes
apparently at random, and while nearly all early Dutch football clubs
originated from an older cricket club, the "cricket" part was not always
included in the name.
Additional information is most welcome.
All clubs in italics were members of the N.V.A.B. at least at some point during the season.

After the fiasco of the Eerste Klasse competition in
the 1892/93 season, Drooglever Fortuijn
suggested (in the Sep 16 issue of the "Nederlandsche Sport") to contest the
championship in a knock-out format instead (with teams meeting over two legs
with a possible third one as decider).
This was not received favourably, and opponents advanced two main reasons for
being confident that the new league season would fare better: first, a number
of clubs had secured new grounds (R.A.P. at the Potgieterstraat, although in the end
they would not play any matches there – for the first time ever, not a single
Eerste Klasse match was played in Amsterdam during the entire season;
H.F.C. in Heemstede; and both Sparta and Victoria at the Ouden Binnenweg;
meanwhile H.V.V. had obtained permission to return playing at the Malieveld), and second,
even more importantly, that one of the Eerste Klasse clubs would soon cease
to be – indeed, the R.C. en V.V. were officially dissolved a week before the
start of the league, reducing the number of matches to be played from 42 to 30.
Thus, at the general meeting on Oct 22, 1893, at café "Zomerzorg", Leiden, it was decided to retain the set-up of the Eerste Klasse, but with one important improvement, already suggested by De Goeje at the meeting on Oct 9, 1892, but rejected at the time: fixtures were determined (on a monthly basis) by the federation, with referees appointed to each match, and, in order to prevent the gratuitous cancelling of matches by clubs all too common in the previous season, the stipulation that: "Eene vereeniging die een vastgestelden wedstrijd niet speelt, verliest dezen en verbeurt eene boete van f 5 ten bate der bondskas; tenzij de aangewezen scheidsrechter grond of weder ongeschikt verklaard heeft. De vereeniging die de 2 punten verdient, krijgt tevens 5 goals in haar voordeel." In other words, only the appointed referee could cancel a fixture, and forfeiture would result in an automatic 0-5 loss.
A proposal from Louis M.J. van Rooy to have reserve sides of Eerste Klasse clubs enter the Tweede Klasse was rejected (by 12 votes to 4); this would lead, in the next season, to the formation of city subassociations (onderbonden). After the promotion of two clubs (Sparta and Go Ahead) to the Eerste Klasse and the withdrawal of Amersfoort shortly before the start of the season, the Tweede Klasse was thus contested by four clubs only, and even that only because Hercules entered into a collaboration with the Gooische F.C., playing as Gooi-Hercules and hosting most home matches in Hilversum, although the official seat of this temporary merger club remained in Utrecht.
In addition, the federation decided to establish two additional league competitions, the so-called Derde Competitie and the Oostelijke Competitie, provided at least three clubs would register for them. This indeed did happen, albeit well into the season. Note that neither competition was part of a league hierarchy.
After Sparta had fielded two Englishmen (Howard and Moran from their March guests H.P.F.C.) against R.A.P. (Howard had already played against H.F.C. three weeks earlier), a special general assembly on Dec 26, 1893, held at café "Brinkman", Groote Markt, in Haarlem, ruled that only Dutch nationals or foreigners who had been resident in the Netherlands for at least six months were entitled to play in the league. At the same meeting, another new competition was announced, that for the Holdert-beeld, a statue offered by H.M.C. Holdert, a former president of defunct V.V.A. However, eventually only one match (the Haarlem derby between H.F.C. and Haarlem) was played before the final, as four of the seven original entrants withdrew during the competition, incensing the donator of the trophy to such an extent that he withdrew it and the final (which tantalisingly would have opposed the two strongest clubs of the country, champions R.A.P. and runners-up H.F.C.) was cancelled.
At the general meeting concluding the season, held
on May 6, 1894 in Utrecht at "het Haagsche Koffiehuis", perennial bottom
finishers Victoria were voted out of the Eerste Klasse; they had won
only one of their ten matches, in spite of having been reinforced at the
beginning of the season by a number of former R.C. en V.V. players, causing
immediate title dreams, and while their two meagre points would have been
enough to secure survival in earlier seasons (with fewer participants in
the Eerste Klasse), this time they had to seek re-election. In
previous years they had won such votes (gaining access to the Eerste Klasse
in 1891 and retaining their place in 1893 in spite of losing all seven matches),
but this time they met with little sympathy, the vote going 24 to 8
(with 4 abstentions) against them. Third time unlucky.
Following that vote, the assembly unanimously
approved a change in article 133 of
the regulations, suggested by Van Leeuwen, to avoid future votes on whether or not
clubs would remain in Eerste Klasse, as follows:
"een vereeniging wordt 2e klasse club, ingeval een vereeniging geen twee punten
heeft kunnen behalen in twee wedstrijden in hetzelfde seizoen", implying a
club would be relegated unless it won at least two matches during the season.
Meanwhile, Tweede Klasse runners-up Haarlem begged for a challenge match
(to which only the second level champions were entitled, Rapiditas having beaten
Victoria four weeks before the meeting) against an Eerste Klasse club in
order to earn promotion, but this was flatly refused by the board, arguing they
could not force any club to meet them for such a match.

Knock-out competition open to all clubs for a statue offered by H.M.C. Holdert,
former president of V.V.A. (Amsterdam), and specifically intended to offer clubs
from outside the Eerste Klasse a chance to play Eerste Klasse clubs.
The first club to win the tournament three times in succession or four times in
total would obtain possession of the trophy.
The original deadline for inscription was Jan 11, by which time five clubs had
registered (Haarlem, H.F.C., R.A.P., Rapiditas and Victoria); after an extension
of that deadline also Gooi-Hercules and Sparta entered, so eventually four clubs
from the Eerste Klasse and three from the Tweede Klasse were part of the draw.

Out of disappointment with the lack of interest shown by the clubs, Holdert withdrew his statue and the final between H.F.C. and R.A.P. was cancelled.

Competition agreed upon by the N.V.A.B. on condition that at least three clubs would register; after Kralingen and Neptunus did so at the beginning of November, Batavia joined later that month and the competition could start; at the start of December, also Feijenoord joined. All four clubs were from Rotterdam.
Note that this competition was explicitly not called "Derde Klasse" and always referred to as "Derde Competitie"; at the time, the only "class distinction" in Dutch football was between clubs belonging to the Eerste Klasse and all others; in principle, any member club was free to enter the Tweede Klasse competition, although this posed obvious logistical problems to clubs in more remote areas, such as those entering the "Oostelijke Competitie" this season.

Sparta again made British sides cross the Channel: first Harwich & Parkeston F.C. repeated their visit of the previous season, playing both Sparta and a Rotterdam XI; four weeks later, Felixstowe F.C. came to play Sparta and the "Bondselftal" (an XI selected by the N.V.A.B.). At the end of March, Sparta paid a return visit to both their guests.
