Set up after the split of the Soviet Union; a competition for all the champions of the newly formed states. The Ukrainian representatives refused to play in the first two competitions.
After a steady decrease in popularity, the CIS Cup was changed from a club tournament to one for national U-21 selections in 2012. The official name was changed to Commonwealth Cup, possibly because Russia has become less willing to recognise the independence of some of the participating states.
In October 2016, it was decided to discontinue the tournament.
