Netherlands B - List of International Matches

Match Details
Note that the list of matches below does not include the matches Netherlands B played against club sides, but only those listed by the K.N.V.B. against "national" representations in its various annuals and memorial books. The rather peculiar inclusion of the match against Normandy in 1937 is presumably due to the fact it was held in connection with the encounter between the A-teams of the Netherlands and France on the same day.

 [1] The hosts were a combination of players from FC Rouen and Havre AC (Rouen played
     at the French first level, Havre at the second, but were promoted at the end of
     the season); as the hosts were not a national team and included three foreign
     nationals, it is not clear why the K.N.V.B. considered this match official for
     Netherlands B rather than a friendly against a club side or combination, but
     presumably that was because this match was seen in connection with the match
     between the Netherlands and France (A-teams) in Amsterdam on the same day.
 [2] The Finnish federation does not consider this match as one played by Finland B,
     the opponents listed by the Dutch federation; note that a full international
     between both A-teams had been played four days earlier in Rotterdam; for the
     second match, Finland fielded five players from that match and the six reserve
     players who had also travelled.
 [3] The Dutch federation announced this match, played one day before the meeting of
     the two A-teams in Denmark, as one between two B-teams; the Danish federation
     lists it among the matches of the national U-21 side.
 [4] The Luxembourg federation incorrectly lists their opponents as South Netherlands.

Match Details

This section is work in progress. Additional information (in particular on missing first names of players) is of course most welcome; so are corrections.

Note that various clubs from Flanders are referred to by their French names (AA La Gantoise, CS Brugeois, FC Brugeois, FC Malinois, RC de Gand, RC de Malines) as was customary until long into the second half of the twentieth century (AA Gent officially changed their name to its Dutch version in 1971, Cercle Brugge in 1968, Club Brugge in 1972, KV Mechelen in 1970 and Racing Gent in 1967; however, Racing Mechelen did so already in 1937).
Likewise, as usual at the time, abbreviated Dutch club names still have the dots which have unfortunately disappeared nowadays.

NB: Finland A had drawn 4-4 against Netherlands A in Rotterdam four days earlier;
    five players (Martin, Myntti, Vaihela, Pelkonen and Stolpe) who had played in
    that match took the field again, along with six reserve players; as only six
    reserve players were reported in the Dutch press for the first match, these
    are all included in the line-up above although Suojanen and Vainio are not
    explicitly mentioned in any of the available match reports (which is why they
    are listed in italics);
    the Finnish FA does not include this match among those of Finland B as listed
    in [SPL 57] (pp. 115-116); according to wikipedia they played as "Helsinki",
    which (if true) would have been a misnomer as the vast majority of the players
    was from clubs from outside the capital.

    their club had suffered a 4-7 loss to Young Boys in spite of having led 3-1 at

 4-10-1959 Luxembourg      Luxembourg       1-3 Netherlands B

Goals: 25' Kerkhoffs 0-1, 29' Janssen 0-2, 64' Bosselaar 0-3, 89' Dimmer 1-3

Luxembourg: Ferdy Lahure (Progrès Niedercorn);
            Ernest Brenner (Stade Dudelange)), Victor Heinen (Jeunesse d'Esch);
            Jean-Pierre Mertl (US Luxembourg), René Pascucci (Jeunesse d'Esch), François Konter (Chiers Rodange);
            Camille Dimmer (Anderlecht), René Schneider (The National) [46' Gilbert Meylender (Stade Dudelange)],
              Ernest Jann (Jeunesse d'Esch), Nicolas Kettel (Stade Dudelange), Albert Schaack (Jeunesse d'Esch);
            trainer: Pierre Sinibaldi;
Netherlands B: Rob van Heeswijk (Blauw-Wit);
               Harry Brüll (Rapid J.C.), Cor Veldhoen (Feijenoord);
               Bennie Muller (Ajax), Jo Walhout (Feijenoord), Hans de Koning (Sparta);
               Tinus Bosselaar (Sparta), Henk Groot (Ajax), Henk Janssen (Stormvogels),
                 Pierre Kerkhoffs (S.C. Enschede), Cor Luiten (D.O.S.);
               unused subs: included Rinus Schaap (S.C. Enschede);
               trainer: Jaap van der Leck;
referee: Willi Ommerborn (Saar).

NB: Muller left injured (75'); the Dutch wanted to replace him by Schaap, as it had
    been agreed both sides could make two substitutions and Luxembourg had made one
    at half-time, but the hosts insisted that agreement was not valid for the second
    half, and the Dutch eventually gave in;
    note that according to [FLF 83] Meylender came in for Dimmer at half-time, which
    is absurd as Dimmer scored the Luxembourg goal in the second half; the confusion
    is due to the fact that Meylender played at Dimmer's first half position, outside
    right, while Dimmer moved to centre forward and Jann to Schneider's place, inside
    right; cf. the match report in the Luxemburger Wort.

18- 5-1960 Tilburg         Netherlands B    2-0 Switzerland B

Goals: 10' Clavan 1-0, 68' Clavan 2-0

Netherlands B: Pim Bekkering (P.S.V.);
               Ger van Mourik (Ajax), Cor Veldhoen (Feijenoord);
               Jan Villerius (Sparta) [80' Guus Haak (A.D.O.)], Jo Walhout (Feijenoord),
                 Piet Fransen (G.V.A.V.);
               Sjaak Swart (Ajax), Piet Kruiver (P.S.V.), Cees Groot (Ajax),
                 Mick Clavan (A.D.O.), Frans Bouwmeester (N.A.C.);
               unused subs: Jacky Cordang (V.V.V.); Jan van der Meer (A.D.O.);
                            Piet de Vries (Sparta);
Switzerland B: Serge Chevrolet (Urania GS) [46' Léo Eichmann (Grasshopper CZ)];
               Fritz Morf (FC Grenchen), Fritz Sidler (FC Grenchen);
               Hans Weber (FC Basel), Hans Reutlinger (FC Zürich) [72' Léon Walker (Young Boys)],
                 Paul Stehrenberger (FC Luzern);
               Kurt Armbruster (Lausanne-Sports), Willy Schneider (Young Boys), Rolf Schmid (FC Winterthur),
                 Jacques Fatton (Servette FC), Marcel Mauron (FC Cantonal);
referee: Gaston Grandain (Belgium).

NB: attendance reported as 1,200; on the same day, the two A-teams met in Zürich;
    in addition the European Cup final between Real Madrid and Eintracht Frankfurt
    was played that evening in Glasgow, and both these matches were broadcasted
    on TV channels which could be received in the south of the Netherlands, which
    is why few football enthousiasts in Tilburg bothered to see this match live;
    the originally selected Jan Jongbloed (D.W.S./A.) and Co Prins (Ajax) withdrew
    injured and were replaced in the squad by Cordang and De Vries.

26-10-1960 Den Bosch       Netherlands B    7-4 Luxembourg

Goals: 32' Konter 0-1, 36' Schouten 1-1, 37' Schouten 2-1, 39' Koopal 3-1,
       44' Cirelli 3-2, 47' Schmit 3-3, 56' Letsch 3-4, 61' Groot 4-4,
       63' Groot 5-4, 68' Koopal 6-4, 82' Koopal 7-4

Netherlands B: Frans Swinkels (V.V.V.);
               Cees Heerschop (P.S.V.), Bep Zaal (Sparta);
               Jan Notermans (Fortuna '54), Hans Kraay (D.O.S.), Hans de Koning (Sparta);
               Pierre Kerkhoffs (S.C. Enschede), Henk Schouten (Feijenoord), Cees Groot (Ajax),
                 Piet Fransen (G.V.A.V.), Coy Koopal (Willem II);
               unused subs: Piet Lagarde (D.H.C.); Kees Smit (Ajax);
                            Reinier Kreijermaat (Feijenoord); Harrie Heijnen (V.V.V.);
               trainer: Elek Schwartz;
Luxembourg: Nicolas Schmitt (US Luxembourg) [62' Théo Stendebach (Stade Dudelange)];
            Ernest Brenner (Stade Dudelange), Nicolas Hoffmann (CS Grevenmacher);
            Ernest Jann (Jeunesse d'Esch), Fernand Brosius (Spora), François Konter (Chiers Rodange);
            Ady Schmit (Fola), Henri Cirelli (Alliance Dudelange), Jean-Pierre Mertl (US Luxembourg),
              Paul May (Jeunesse d'Esch), Léon Letsch (Spora);
            unused subs: Gilbert Meylender (Stade Dudelange), Gaston Bauer (US Luxembourg),
                         René Schneider (Stade Dudelange);
            trainer: Robert Heinz;
referee: Jef Casteleyn (Belgium).

NB: the scorer of the first goal of Luxembourg was also reported as Cirelli or Schmit;
    the scorer of the sixth goal of Netherlands B was also reported as Kerkhoffs or Groot;
    it was also reported Luxembourg made a second substitution; as one report stated that
    Schmitt was substituted by Meylender, possibly the latter replaced another player;
    note that [FLF 83] includes this match among those played against South Netherlands,
    which is evidently absurd given the Dutch line-up (only four of the eleven players,
    and only one of the four reserves, would have been eligible for the South Netherlands
    side); in fact, the K.N.V.B. had unilaterally ended the series of matches between
    Luxembourg and South Netherlands, stretching back thirty-five years, in 1957.

11-11-1962 Luxembourg      Luxembourg       2-6 Netherlands B

Luxembourg: René Hoffmann (Jeunesse d'Esch);
            Ernest Brenner (Stade Dudelange), René Kaufmann  (Jeunesse d'Esch);
            Jean Vandivinit (US Dudelange), Fernand Brosius (Spora), René Schneider (National)
              [46' François Kohl (Aris Bonnevoie)];
            Constant Winandy (US Luxembourg), Johny Hilbert (Avenir Beggen), Johny Léonard (US Luxembourg),
              Josy Kunnert (Aris Bonnevoie) [46' Paul Ries (US Luxembourg)], Jean Hemmerling (US Luxembourg);
Netherlands B: Piet Lagarde (S.C. Enschede);
               Arend van der Wel (S.C. Enschede), Jan Renders (P.S.V.);
               Peter Benen (Fortuna '54), Jannie Schilder (Volendam), Daan Schrijvers (N.A.C.);
               Frits Soetekouw (De Volewijckers), Pierre Kerkhoffs (P.S.V.), Frans Geurtsen (Velox)
                 [46' Bert Theunissen (Heracles)], Egbert ter Mors (Enschedese Boys), Dick Reekers (Heracles);
               unused subs: Jan Jongbloed (D.W.S.); Hassie van Wijk (De Volewijckers), Martinus Okhuijsen (D.O.S.);
               trainer: Jaap van der Leck;
referee: Johannes Malka (West Germany).

NB: attendance reported as 700; Benen's family name was usually spelled Beenen.

29- 9-1965 Den Haag        Netherlands B    3-0 Luxembourg

               Bennie Muller (Ajax), Joop Burgers (D.W.S.);
               Chris Coenen (Fortuna '54), Co Prins (Ajax), Piet Keizer (Ajax), Kees Aarts (A.D.O.);
Luxembourg: Nicolas Schmitt (US Mondorf);
            Erwin Kuffer (Red Boys), Jean-Pierre Hoffstetter (Aris Bonnevoie), Mathias Ewen (US Luxembourg),
              Fernand Brosius (Spora);
            Fernand Jeitz (Aris Bonnevoie)), Norry Wampach (Spora);
            René Schneider (US Luxembourg), Johny Kirsch (US Rumelange) [46' Josy Kirchens (Aris Bonnevoie)],
              Edy Dublin (US Mondorf) [72' Johny Léonard (US Luxembourg)], Henri Klein (FC Liégeois);
            trainer: Robert Heinz;
referee: Helmut Fritz (West Germany).

NB: attendance reported as 10,000;
    note that according to [FLF 83] Kirchens replaced Klein at half-time and Léonard
    replaced Kirsch late in the second half; in fact, Kirchens replaced Kirsch but
    played as outside left, while Klein moved from that position to the centre of
    the attack, joining Dublin there; cf. the Luxemburger Wort's match report.

17- 4-1968 Luxembourg      Luxembourg       3-4 Netherlands B

Goals: 10' Klein 1-0, 44' Dublin 2-0, 47' Heijerman 2-1, 48' Léonard 3-1,
       53' Verdonk 3-2, 55' Strik 3-3, 65' Bosveld 3-4

Luxembourg: René Hoffmann (Jeunesse d'Esch) [66' Nino Scrigna (Stade Dudelange)];
            Norbert Leszczynski (US Rumelange) [61' Furio Cardoni (US Rumelange)], Fernand Jeitz (FC Metz),
              Mathias Ewen (Spora), Johny Hoffmann (Jeunesse d'Esch);
            Norbert Reiland (Fola), Nicolas Hoffmann (Jeunesse d'Esch);
            Jean Klein (US Dudelange), Edy Dublin (AS Nancy), Johny Léonard (FC Metz),

            trainer: Robert Heinz;
Netherlands B: Ton Thie (A.D.O.);
               Theo van der Burch (A.D.O.), Aad Mansveld (A.D.O.), Willem de Vries (F.C. Twente),
                 Paul van Egmond (Telstar);
               Jacques van Stippent (P.S.V.) [46' Pleun Strik (P.S.V.)], Piet de Zoete (A.D.O.),
               Nol Heijerman (Sparta), Hans Venneker (N.E.C.), Henk "Charly" Bosveld (Sparta),
                 Lambert Verdonk (Sparta);
               trainer: Ron Groenewoud;
referee: Raymond Poncin (France).

NB: attendance reported as 3,000;
    note that according to [FLF 83] Cardoni replaced Nicolas Hoffmann; in fact, the
    latter took Leszczynski's place at the back while Cardoni played in midfield,
    cf. the match report in the Luxemburger Wort.

10- 3-1970 Eindhoven       Netherlands B    3-0 Luxembourg

Goals: 31' Klijnjan 1-0, 59' Klijnjan 2-0, 78' Van der Kuijlen 3-0

Netherlands B: Piet Schrijvers (F.C. Twente);
               Dick Schneider (Go Ahead), Pleun Strik (P.S.V.), Aad Mansveld (A.D.O.),
                 Ad Mellaard (N.E.C.);
               Johan Boskamp (Holland Sport), Cees van Ierssel (F.C. Twente);
               Ad Brouwers (N.A.C.), Willy van der Kuijlen (P.S.V.), Jan Klijnjan (Sparta),
                 Theo Pahlplatz (F.C. Twente) [46' Jo Bonfrère (M.V.V.)];
               trainer: Georg Kessler;
Luxembourg: René Hoffmann (Jeunesse d'Esch);
            Erwin Kuffer (Standard CL), Fernand Jeitz (FC Metz), René Flenghi (Red Boys),
              Johny Hoffmann (Jeunesse d'Esch);
            Norbert Leszczynski (US Rumelange), Norbert Reiband (Fola);
            Edy Dublin (AS Nancy), Johny Léonard (AA Gent) [86' Josy Kirchens (Aris Bonnevoie)],
              Paul Philipp (Union Saint-Gilloise), Jos Zangerle (Racing White);
            trainer: Ernst Melchior;
referee: Fred Delcourt (Belgium).

NB: attendance reported as 5,000;
    note that according to [FLF 83] Kirchens replaced Zangerle, but in fact he
    came in for Léonard, who had been knocked out after a wild attack by Dutch
    'keeper Schrijvers; presumably the confusion is due to a change of positions
    after the substitution, as also happened for the matches on 4 October 1959,
    29 September 1965 and 17 April 1968; in the latter two matches, Kirchens had
    already played as outside left, his default position and also Zangerle's at
    kick-off.
