Ster 1-2 Nan Hwa Note: at gemeente-sportterrein, Kosambi, Cheribon. The hosts were first announced as a Cheribon/Tegal XI but later specified to be a combination of Y.H.H. (a Chinese club side, presumably from Tegal) and Zwarte Ster (a "native" club side, 1936/37 champions of the P.S.I.T. league in Cheribon, who had trashed "European" Cheribon champions P.S.C. 7-1 in a friendly in April). 31- 7 S.V.J.A. 1-3 Nan Hwa S.V.J.A.: Tanasalé; Husurpunny, Teterissa; Huwae, Tetalepta, Anakotta; Taihitu, Pattiwael, Sahetapy, Siegers, Tarumasely Nan Hwa: Tam Kwan-kon; Mak Sui-hon, Lee Tin-sang; Leung Wing-chiu, Tak-poa, Lee Kwok-wai; Tso Kwai-shing, Fung King-cheung, Lee Wai-tong, Lai Shiu-wing, Lee Shek-yau referee: Mols Goals: Pattiwael 1-0, Fung King-cheung 1-1, Lai Shiu-wing 1-2, Fung King-cheung 1-3 Half-Time: 1-2 Note: at Planten- en Dierentuin. Van Beuzekom, Taihitu, Zomers, Pattiwael and Meeng later were part of the Dutch East Indies squad at the 1938 World Cup. 7- 8 P.S.S.I. 2-2 Nan Hwa P.S.S.I.: R. Maladi (Solo); Soemarjo "King Kong" (Solo), Aboed (Cheribon); Sardjo (Cheribon), Hardiman (Solo), Soewarno (Solo); Jazid (Solo), Soetris (Solo), Djawad (Djokjakarta), Hoedoro (Cheribon), Moestaram (Cheribon); reserve keeper: Soebowo (Djokjakarta); Hardiman replaced Soekemi (Solo), who had been included in the originally announced line-up Nan Hwa: Tam Kwan-kon; Mak Sui-hon, Lee Tin-sang; Wong Mee-shum, Leung Wing-chiu (HT: Lim Tak-poa), Lau Hing-choi; Yeung Shui-yick (HT: Kwai Shing), Fung King-cheung, Lee Wai-tong, Lai Shiu-wing, Lee Shek-yau referee: Willé Goals: Lai Shiu-wing 0-1, Moestaram 1-1, Moestaram 2-1, Fung King-cheung 2-2 Half-Time: 0-1 Note: the P.S.S.I. team consisted of 6 players from Persis (Solo), 4 from P.S.I.T. (Cheribon) and 1 from P.S.I.M. (Djokjakarta); this draw, undoubtedly a fine result for the representation of the "native" football federation of Java at its maiden appearance, is occasionally advanced as proof of the superiority of "native" football on Java as compared to the "European" version. However, that is stretching it. Quite apart from the fact that the "European" federations and clubs on Java were not closed to "native" players (ambonese side S.V.J.A. were reigning champions of the V.B.O. and supplied a number of players to the V.B.O. selections; the S.V.B.B./Vios combination which played Nan Hwa on 26 July only consisted for about half of "Europeans"), friendly results between "European" and "native" city federations suggest otherwise: in Batavia alone, the V.B.O. beat the V.I.J. 9-0 on 19 July 1936 and again 8-0 on 25 March 1939. In fact, not only the N.I.V.U., F.I.F.A. members for the territory, but also the H.N.V.B., the ethnic Chinese football federation on Java, probably boasted a stronger team than the P.S.S.I. 8- 8 V.S.O. 0-2 Nan Hwa V.S.O.: David; Achmad, Segher; Beng Gwee, Hok Soei, Faulhaber; Berkenbosch, Mochtar, Moedjono, Marmo, Soepeno Nan Hwa: Wah Gay; Lee Tin-sang, Mak Sui-hon; Lau Hing-choi, Leung Wing-chiu, Lee Kwok-wai; Tso Kwai-shing, Fung King-cheung, Lee Wai-tong, Lai Shiu-wing, Kwee Leong referee: Willé Goals: Tso Kwai-shing 0-1, N.N. (pen) 0-2 Half-Time: 0-0 Note: in this match Nan Hwa star striker and captain Lee Wai-tong broke his tibia. 21- 8 Miss Riboet XI 3-0 Nan Hwa Note: Miss Riboet (Miss Ribut - ribut means "noisy" in Malay) was a famous native actress who managed a football side (representing her Maleisch Operette- Gezelschap Orion) since 1928, playing (in green shirts, thus nicknamed "De Groenen") on selected occasions such as charity matches. At the time, Miss Riboet XI most likely was the strongest "native" football team in the Dutch East Indies. In November 1937, striker Abidin was mentioned among the candidates for the Dutch East Indies 1938 World Cup selection. Originally Persib (the "native" city federation of Bandoeng) had been announced as Nan Hwa opponents for this match; apparently Miss Riboet XI were a late replacement. 26- 8 V.B.O. 4-0 Nan Hwa V.B.O.: Eng Siat; Teterissa, Brugman; Lippelt, Tjoetjoe, Anakotta; Taihitu, Pattiwael, Jahn, Lübach, Meeng Nan Hwa: Wah-gay; Mak Sui-hon, Lee Tin-sang; Lau Hing-choi, Leung Wing-chiu, Lee Kwok-wai; Yeung Shui-yick, Chan Tak-fai, Fung King-cheung, Lai Shiu-wing, Lee Shek-yau referee: Hermanus Goals: Lübach 1-0, Jahn 2-0, Meeng 3-0, Jahn 4-0 Half-Time: 1-0 Note: at U.M.S.-terrein; played as a charity match for the Chinese Red Cross in the light of the brutal Japanese invasion of China.
