Luxembourg 1909/10

The F.S.L.S.A. (Fédération des Sociétés Luxembourgeoises de Sports Athlétiques) was founded on 22 November 1908 by numerous sports clubs in Luxembourg and initially covered football, (track and field) athletics and cycling.
It started its first football league season on 12 December 1909, with sixteen clubs divided over two divisions, eight in Division A and the other half in Division B. In addition, divisions A2 and B2 were formed for their reserve sides. The programme for the first half of the season was published on 7 December in L'indépendance luxembourgeoise, the only newspaper to cover the first season seriously.
Within two weeks, two clubs dropped out of the second level Division B, but the federation had no problems finding two other clubs taking over their fixtures (but not their results). Later, Division A also lost some clubs. In January, Chiers Rodange left, to be replaced by Sparta Dudelange before reentering a few weeks later, but eventually neither finished the season. More seriously, just before the halfway stage Sporting, one of the three major clubs from the capital, withdrew as well, after losing to local rivals and eventual champions Racing, so eventually only six clubs finished the season.
Apparently as an afterthought, a third level Division C was formed in January, consisting of two clubs only.
Not all results are known, and it is clear not all matches were played, but the season had a worthy climax when the two leading teams, Racing and Union, who had drawn 1-1 on the first match day of the season and subsequently had won all their other matches (apart from Union's loss at Sporting on New Year's Day, which was deleted from the records after Sporting decided to call it quits) met on the final match day of the season, Ascension Day 1910. Had that match, refereed by Charles Barette from Brussels, Belgium, been drawn, a championship decider would have taken place the following Sunday at Sporting's ground, but Racing won 3-2 to claim the first ever Luxembourg football league title and the accompanying Coupe Pescatore, provided by Maurice Pescatore, the mayor of Luxembourg-Ville and honorary president of the F.S.L.S.A.
Ten days after that decisive match, the F.S.L.S.A. was officially affiliated to the F.I.F.A., on 15 May 1910, having already been admitted provisionally on the day of its application, 13 March 1910, when its general assembly had unanimously voted to join F.I.F.A. rather than the U.S.F.S.A., the French association which had been the driving force behind the foundation of the U.I.A.F.A., a short-lived rival federation.

NB: apparently four irrelevant matches were not refixtured:
    both matches between Jeunesse (Echternach) and The National (Esch/Alzette);
    one match between Jeunesse (Echternach) and Jeunesse de la Frontière (Esch/Alzette);
    one match between The National (Esch/Alzette) and Union Sportive (Rumelange)

The Bel-Val               0-1 Mansfeldia Clausen

Reported Table (up to and including matches Apr 10):

 1.Mansfeldia (Clausen)                         13  10  1  2  26-12  21  Promoted

 -.US Rollingergrund withdrew, replaced by FC 1909 Pfaffenthal

NB: one more loss than win; odd number of matches; total goal difference +6;
    as Marisca still had two matches remaining (away to Mansfeldia and The Belval),
    their record is clearly incorrect

Remaining Matches (with available results):

[Apr 17]
Mansfeldia Clausen 1-0 Marisca Mersch [abandoned at 1-0 in 20', Marisca walked off]

Résidence Walferdange     0-2 Phalanx Kleinbettingen

Résidence Walferdange     n/p SC Dommeldange
  [instead of the above two matches, a friendly was played:
   SC Dommeldange         3-0 Marisca Mersch]

[May 5]
FC 1909 Pfaffenthal        -  The Bel-Val

NB: it is likely that Dommeldange and Marisca were awarded forfeit losses for their
    unplayed matches on Apr 24 and May 1

Final Table (missing result May 5):

 1.Mansfeldia (Clausen)                         14  11  1  2         23  Promoted

 -.US Rollingergrund withdrew, replaced by FC 1909 Pfaffenthal

[*] under the assumption that Dommeldange and Marisca had their unplayed matches since Apr 17
    awarded as forfeit losses

NB: thanks to winning this second level league competition, Mansfeldia obtained the "Coupe Metz",
    offered by Max Metz, the president of the F.S.L.S.A.

However, one more match, explicitly denoted as "match de championnat" pertaining to "Classe B",
was reported in June, possibly a replay for an earlier match (originally fixtured for Feb 6):

[Jun 12]
FC 1909 Pfaffenthal 2-2 Phalanx Kleinbettingen

Division C

Participants (2):
 F.C. "Rêver Dal" Wecker
 "Swift" Wasserbillig

[Jan 9]
Rêver Dal                 1-1 Swift Wasserbillig
[Jan 16]
Swift Wasserbillig         -  Rêver Dal

Winners: Swift Wasserbillig

The reserve teams of the clubs in the top two levels could enter Division A2 resp. B2.

NB: presumably Rollingergrund 2 left when their first team withdrew from Division B;
    FC 1909 Pfaffenthal 2 and The Bel-Val 2 may have entered during the season

Challenge Steinès 1910

Post-season competition for an "objet d'art" provided by Alphonse Steinès, a Luxembourg
editor at the French sports magazine L'Auto.

This was the first edition; as the season was already far advanced it was played before the
start of the next season instead of at the end of this season (the second and third editions
were played in spring; the original regulations set up by Alphonse Steinès stipulated that
each edition had to be finished by Whitsuntide). The first club to win the challenge three
times obtained permanent possession of the trophy.
