Zilveren Voetbal (Rotterdam) 1901-1956

Inspired by the Coupe Van der Straeten Ponthoz in Brussels, the second edition of which had just finished, a committee of five men (Jac. Musly, Herman A. Tromp, Joh. J. Meijer, C.W. van Hasselt and J.L.F. de Meijere) was formed in April 1901 in Rotterdam to organise international matches in September that year for a silver football worth 600 guilders donated by an anonymous football enthousiast. This trophy was to be contested annually, with the first club to win it three times in succession or five times overall earning its permanent possession.
Eligible to enter were all Dutch first class clubs, all Dutch champions of a second class competition, and all foreign amateur clubs. The first edition had six participants: Dutch champions H.V.V. from Den Haag, Belgian league runners-up Beerschot from Antwerpen, newly promoted H.F.C. from Haarlem, and three local clubs, Olympia, Rapiditas, and Sparta (who had just been relegated from the Dutch western first class but acted as the hosts).
H.V.V. won the first three editions, at each occasion as reigning Dutch champions, so De Groote Haagsche were handed the trophy to keep in 1903 and a new Zilveren Voetbal was commissioned. That was played for on twenty occasions (the 1914 edition was cancelled due to general mobilisation after the outbreak of World War I) before H.B.S. won it for the fifth time in 1924; thus also the second trophy ended up in Den Haag, owned by De Kraaien.
By then, many similar pre-season tournaments had been set up in the country, and clubs from Amsterdam did not enter anymore (Ajax and Blauw-Wit had been the last participants from the capital in 1917, when a record 24 clubs entered the competition, before D.W.V. took part in the final edition in 1956) and those from Antwerpen and Haarlem very rarely; instead, participation was dominated by clubs from Rotterdam, Den Haag, nearby towns like Dordrecht and Schiedam, and clubs from the south and east of the Netherlands. In the thirteen years it was contested, the third Zilveren Bal was only twice taken out of Rotterdam before Feijenoord obtained permanent ownership, beating Sparta in a final that was to settle the destination of the trophy one way or the other.
The tournament continued to be played annually, also during World War II, with the list of winners obtaining an increasingly southern flavour: B.V.V. from Den Bosch narrowly failed to secure permanent possession of the fourth trophy when losing their 1947 semifinal on penalties, while V.V.V. from Venlo won the last regular edition in 1954, when the advent of professional football in the Netherlands put an end to the event after more than half a century, as the organisers were committed to amateurism. A final edition was played in Rotterdam in 1956 between eight amateur clubs, before it was moved to Den Haag, where the tournament languished for three more decades (it was last held in 1985) before the fourth and final Zilveren Voetbal was handed to H.V.V. in 1998.
A somewhat peculiar epilogue followed more than half a century after the last edition in Rotterdam, when the two record winners, Feyenoord (as they are spelled since 1971) and Sparta Rotterdam (who added the name of their home city to their official denomination in 2004) organised a match at Spangen on 5 January 2011 to "restore the tradition". Never mind that the original tournament never was a one-off match, never was played in the winter, or ever allowed the entrance of professional clubs – or indeed the "Bosselaar" controversy marring the closing match of the 1956 edition. The 2011 match finished 4-2 for Feyenoord but was not repeated, thanks at least in part to vocal public outrage generated by indignant football historians.

All tournaments below were held in Rotterdam (at the various grounds of Sparta), with two exceptions: the 1907 edition was played in Haarlem because the accommodation of Sparta was undergoing renovation (H.V.V. would have liked to organise it in Den Haag, but the Z.V.C. (Zilveren Voetbal Commissie, the organising committee) preferred the financial arrangements offered in Haarlem) and the 1909 edition was moved to Den Haag because of an outbreak of cholera in Rotterdam.

Zilveren Voetbal (Den Haag) 1957-1985 (list of finals)

Notes

H.V.V. (1901-1903) won the tournament three times in succession; no other club ever repeated that feat, although Feijenoord (1930-1933), Sparta (1934-1937) and Eindhoven (1949-1952) all reached four consecutive finals, with Eindhoven losing the first three of those before finally winning the tournament. Among the clubs reaching multiple finals, only H.V.V. (7) and B.V.V. (3) never lost one.

Two foreign clubs, both from Antwerpen, participated in the tournament: Beerschot on nine occasions between 1901 and 1932, only once (1910) winning a tie, and Antwerp once (in 1906, losing their only match).

To settle drawn matches, originally 15 minutes extra time were played, split into two halves of 7½ minutes each; if the match was still drawn, this was followed by sudden death extra time (this first occurred in the second round of the third edition in 1903, between Velocitas and H.V.V.). After the 1913 semifinal between D.F.C. and H.F.C. had required nearly 75 minutes of extra time, causing the postponement of the final, it was decided to abolish sudden death extra time at the 1915 tournament and replace it by the drawing of lots. One year later also regular extra time was scrapped for all matches other than the final.
To reduce the element of chance, the drawing of lots was replaced by penalty shoot-outs, first used in 1930. These consisted of three penalties each, usually all taken by the same player, with one club taking three first before the second club did so; therefore, if the first club had converted all three spot kicks and the second club missed its first, the shoot-out was over with 3-0; likewise, if the first club missed all three, the second needed to convert just one to win 0-1. If both clubs scored the same number of penalties, this procedure was repeated ad nauseam; one tie, between R.F.C. and B.V.V. in the first round in 1945, required six such series of three penalties each (in total, 35 penalties were taken) before the winners were known.

NB: after the final a friendly was played (as main attraction of the day)
    between two professional clubs:

[Aug 26]
Sparta 5-4 Sportclub Enschede

NB: originally a match between Sparta and Feijenoord had been planned, but
Feijenoord refused to play due to a conflict with Sparta, whose former
player Tinus Bosselaar had moved to Feijenoord in 1954 but wanted to
use a clause in his contract that he could return to Sparta (without
a transfer fee) if he so requested before Jul 1, 1956; because of this,
Sportclub Enschede were invited instead. One shudders to think what
the amateur-minded members of the Zilveren Voetbal Commissie must have
thought about this farce. Eventually an arbitration committee ruled
in favour of Bosselaar and Sparta.
