It has been really difficult to retain the Copa El País, and the few teams that have achieved it, did it in their golden years. Estudiantil lost only one match in their three-straight Copa El País titles in the early seventies, Universal reached four finals from 1967 to 1970, Atenas and 18 de Julio (Rio) won two out of three finals each, and Porongos remained unbeaten since 1993 to 1997, winning the cup in 1994 and 1995, and they could perfectly have won in 1996, if the championship wouldn't have been cancelled to play the Torneo Nacional. From 1998 to 2000, the champions qualified to the Torneo Mayor, therefore being unable to defend their title. The following series of consecutive wins have been achieved: 3 (1972-73-74) Estudiantil (Pay) 2 (1967-68) Universal (San) (1975-76) Atenas (Mal) (1982-83) 18 de Julio (Rio) (1994-95) Porongos (Fls) Other series: Consecutive wins by departments: 5 (1997-98-99-00-01) Maldonado (Punta del Este, Libertad, San Carlos, Ituzaingó, Atenas) 3 (1972-73-74) Paysandú (Estudiantil) 2 (1967-68) San José (Universal) (1975-76) Maldonado (Atenas) (1982-83) Río Negro (18 de Julio) (1994-95) Flores (Porongos) Consecutive wins of Zonal Championship: Coastal: 3 (1981-82-83) 18 de Julio (Rio) 2 (1975-78) 18 de Julio (Rio) (1989-90) Wanderers (Art) South: 2 (1978-79) Santa Bernardina (Dur) (1984-85) Quilmes (Fld) (1991-92) Porongos (Fls) East: 4 (1987-88-89-90) Palermo (Roc) 3 (1982-83-84) San Carlos (Mal) 2 (1980-81) Defensor (Mal) (1985-86) Atenas (Mal) Northeast: (North in 1965) 2 (1980-81) Conventos (Cer) (1982-83) Sarandí Universitario (Riv) (1984-85) Conventos (Cer) (1989-90) Conventos (Cer) (1991-92) Fritsa (Tac) In 1969-70, Universal (San) became the first team to lose consecutive finals. Their record was equalled in 1983-84 by San Carlos (Mal) and in 1989-90 by Wanderers (Art).
The only teams that performed this feat more than once are Estudiantil and Porongos, which won two tournaments without loosing a single match. On the other hand, Maldonado is the department with more unbeaten champions, 3 (Ituzaingó, Libertad and Punta del Este). All unbeaten winners with their P-W-D-L-F-A records: 1971 Treinta y Tres 8 7 1 0 22-10 1973 Estudiantil (Paysandú) 6 4 2 0 11- 4 [defending champions] 1974 Estudiantil (Paysandú) 8 6 2 0 20- 4 [defending champions] 1979 18 de Julio (Col. 18) 10 5 5 0 15-10 1980 River Plate (Florida) 9 6 3 0 18- 8 1985 Quilmes (Florida) 11 5 6 0 11- 6 1992 Punta del Este 11 6 5 0 14- 5 1993 Artigas (Melo) 10 4 6 0 13- 6 1994 Porongos (Trinidad) 12 10 2 0 21- 3 1995 Porongos (Trinidad) 8 4 4 0 16- 5 [defending champions] 1998 Libertad (San Carlos) 10 8 2 0 25- 4 2000 Ituzaingó (P.del Este) 10 7 3 0 22-10 2003 Wanderers (Artigas) 10 8 2 0 27- 7
The record number of consecutive participations in the Copa El País is 11, held by Porongos. All clubs to play at least 4 times successive tournaments are included below: 11 Porongos (1987-1997) 7 Río Negro (1987-1993) 6 Universal (1967-1972) Río Negro (1980-1985) Palermo (1987-1992) Atlético Florida (1998-2003) [*] 5 Estudiantil (1971-1975) Santa Bernardina (1978-82) 18 de Julio (Fray Bentos) (1981-1985) Salto Uruguay (1998-2002) Independiente (Trinidad) (1999-2003) [*] 4 Atenas (1974-1977) San Carlos (1982-1985) Estudiantil (1985-1988) San Eugenio (1985-1988) Tabaré (Florida) (1985-1988) Treinta y Tres (Treinta y Tres) (1987-1990) Conventos (1988-1991) Vida Nueva (San Bautista) (1989-1992) Central Palestino (1991-1994) Plaza (Colonia) (1996-1999) Juventud (Colonia) (2000-2003) [*] Tabaré (Piriápolis) (2000-2003) [*] [*] Denotes a serie in progress.
From 1965 until 2003 (39 editions), 289 teams have participated in Copa El País. There are 20 teams with 10 or more participations: 20 Río Negro [San] 19 Independiente [Fls] 17 Porongos [Fls] 16 Conventos [Cer], Atenas [Mal] 14 San Eugenio [Art], Plaza (Colonia) [Col], Huracán [TyT], Treinta y Tres [TyT] 13 Estudiantil [Pay], 18 de Julio [Rio] 12 Quilmes [Fld], Palermo [Roc], Salto Uruguay [Sal] 11 Juventud [Col], Santa Bernardina [Dur], Atlético Florida [Fld], Oriental [Riv] 10 Artigas [Cer], San Carlos [Mal] By departments the teams with most participations are: Artigas: San Eugenio, 14 Canelones: Artigas, 6 Cerro Largo: Conventos, 16 Colonia: Plaza (Colonia), 14 Durazno: Santa Bernardina, 11 Flores: Independiente, 19 Florida: Quilmes, 12 Lavalleja: Nacional, 6 Maldonado: Atenas, 16 Paysandú: Estudiantil, 13 Río Negro: 18 de Julio, 13 Rivera: Oriental, 11 Rocha: Palermo, 12 Salto: Salto Uruguay, 12 San José: Río Negro, 20 Soriano: Independiente (Mercedes), Sportivo Barracas, 8 Tacuarembó: Fritsa, 8 Treinta y Tres: Huracán, Treinta y Tres, 14
Atenas and Estudiantil are the teams with most final appearances: 5. Teams with at least 2 appearances are: 5 Atenas (4 wins, 1 loss) Estudiantil (4 wins, 1 loss) 4 18 de Julio [Rio] (2 wins, 2 losses) Universal (2 wins, 2 losses) Wanderers [Art] (1 win, 3 losses) 3 Porongos (3 wins) Salto Uruguay (1 win, 2 losses) San Carlos (1 win, 2 losses) San Eugenio (1 win, 2 losses) 2 Palermo (2 wins) Punta del Este (2 wins) Atlético Florida (1 win, 1 loss) Fritsa (1 win, 1 loss) Quilmes (1 win, 1 loss) Río Negro (1 win, 1 loss) Central Palestino (2 losses) Considering consecutive participations in the final (whether won or lost), Universal (1967-70) and Estudiantil (1971-74) share the record with 4 participations. But whereas Estudiantil lost only the first final, Universal lost the last two. Teams with 3 consecutive final appearances are: Atenas (1975-77) and 18 de Julio [Río Negro] (1981-83). Atenas lost the third final while 18 de Julio lost the first. Teams that lost consecutive finals are: Universal (1969-70), San Carlos (1983-84) and Wanderers [Artigas] (1989-90). Wanderers also lost a third final in 1999.
Besides the 25 teams that have won the Copa El País, 16 other teams have been unlucky finalists (in total 41 teams reached the final). This is the list of unlucky finalists: 2 Central Palestino (Roc) 1 Carrasco (Can), Central (San), Conventos (Cer), Defensor (Tac), Deportivo Artigas (Sal), Frontera Rivera Chico (Riv), Juventud (Col), Lavalleja (Lav), Nacional (San), Olimpia (Cer), Rausa (Mal), Sarandí (Col), Sportivo Yí (Dur), Unión Juvenil (Dur), Wanderers (Pay) Other curiosities: Ten teams appeared only once in the Final and they won it. These are: 18 de Julio [Sal], Artigas [Cer], Bella Vista, Defensor, Independencia, Independiente, Ituzaingó, Libertad, River Plate and Treinta y Tres. Only 3 other teams have a perfect final record: Porongos 3 (3 wins), Palermo 2 (2 wins) and Punta del Este 2 (2 wins). Three times the defending champion lost in the final: Salto Uruguay (1967), Universal (1969) and Atenas (1977). In contrast, twice a beaten finalist went one better the next season: Estudiantil (1972, runners-up in 1971) and 18 de Julio [Rio] (1982, runners-up in 1981).
In the 39 Copa El País tournaments played since 1965, the holders were eliminated on 25 times (6 times they retained the title, twice (2) the tournament wasn't defined, and in the first tournament of course no holders took part). Many different circumstances didn't allow the holders to defend their title: 1972 Treinta y Tres (1971 champions) were disqualified by OFI for irregularities. 1979 As 1978 tournament wasn't finished, there were no holders, and Bella Vista (1977 champions) were eliminated in 1978. 1996 Porongos (1995 champions) qualified to the Torneo Nacional and were eliminated by Rampla Juniors (Montevideo) in the First Round. However, they were still holders in 1997 when Río Negro (San José) eliminated them. 1998-00 Punta del Este (1997 champions), Libertad (1998) and San Carlos (1999) qualified to the Torneo Mayor. 2002 Atenas (2001 champions) became proffesional and join the Second Level Uruguayan Championship in 2002. All clubs to eliminate the defending champions (seasons in which they won themselves in bold): 3 Río Negro [San] (1981, 1990, 1997) 2 Universal [San] (1967, 1970) 18 de Julio [Rio] (1975, 1978) San Eugenio [Art] (1985, 1987) Porongos [Fls] (1988, 1991) 1 Rausa [Mal] (1966) Independiente [Fls] (1969) Estudiantil [Pay] (1971) Bella Vista [Pay] (1977) San Lorenzo [Rio] (1980) San Carlos [Mal] (1982) Independencia [Pay] (1984) Central [San] (1986) Vida Nueva [Can] (1989) Deportivo Artigas [Sal] (1992) Central Palestino [Roc] (1993) Lavalleja [TyT] (1994) Atenas [Mal] (2001) Wanderers [Art] (2003) Elimination of holders by departments: San José 6 eliminations (Río Negro 3, Universal 2, Central 1) Artigas 3 eliminations (San Eugenio 2, Wanderers 1) Flores 3 eliminations (Porongos 2, Independiente 1) Maldonado 3 eliminations (Rausa 1, San Carlos 1, Atenas 1) Paysandú 3 eliminations (Estudiantil 1, Bella Vista 1, Independencia 1) Río Negro 3 eliminations (18 de Julio 2, San Lorenzo 1) Canelones 1 elimination (Vida Nueva 1) Rocha 1 elimination (Central Palestino 1) Salto 1 elimination (Deportivo Artigas 1) Treinta y Tres 1 elimination (Lavalleja 1) Miscellaneous facts: - No team has been able to perform this feat in consecutive seasons. - Eight times (8) the team who beat the holders eventually won that year's tournament. - Three times (3) the holders were beaten in the final. - Eight times (8) the team who beat the holders lost in the final: Rausa (1966), Universal (1970), Estudiantil (1971), 18 de Julio [Río Negro] (1975), Central [San José] (1986), Deportivo Artigas [Salto] (1992). San Eugenio were beaten twice in the final after eliminating the holders (1985, 1987).
In the seasons 1965-66, 1975 and 1978-1991, Zonal Championships were played simultaneously with Copa El País. These Championships had a great importance at that time, and they marked important successes for some teams. Conventos from Melo for example, never won the major trophy, however they managed to obtain the top of the Northeast Zone in seven occasions. Another curiosity was that Wanderers (Artigas), three times unlucky finalist of Copa El País, conquered the Coastal Zone title two consecutive times (1989-90). On the other hand, Estudiantil, one of the most succesful teams of the competition, only won their Zone once (1986). These are the list of champions for each zone: Coastal: 5 18 de Julio (Rio) 2 San Eugenio (Art), Wanderers (Art) 1 18 de Julio (Sal), Deportivo Artigas (Sal), Estudiantil (Pay), Independencia (Pay), Libertad (Cañada Nieto, Sor), Salto Uruguay (Sal), San Lorenzo (Sor), Sportivo Barracas (Sor), Wanderers (Pay) South: 3 Porongos (Fls), Quilmes (Fld) 2 Río Negro (San), Santa Bernardina (Dur) 1 Carrasco (Can), Central (San), River Plate (Fld), Unión Juvenil (Dur), Vida Nueva (San Bautista, Can) East: 4 Atenas (Mal), Palermo (Roc) 3 San Carlos (Mal) 2 Defensor (Mal) 1 Central Palestino (Roc), Huracán (TyT), Lavalleja (Lav), Punta del Este (Mal), Rausa (Mal) Northeast: 7 Conventos (Cer) 3 Fritsa (Tac) 2 Sarandí Universitario (Riv) 1 Ceibal (Riv), Estudiantes (Tac), Peñarol (Paso de los Toros, Tac), Policial (Tac) The Northeast Zone wasn't formed when the Zonal Championships were played for the first time, so the tournaments of the North Zone (1965) and the South/North Zone (1966) were played instead, the winners were Oriental (Rivera) and Progreso (Canelones) respectively.
Since 1965, Copa El País was played mostly home and away; so when the teams were tied on points and goal difference (except when away goals or most goals in one match mattered) a penalty shootout was required. The exception is in the finals where if the teams tie on points a third match is played. These are the penalty shootouts that have taken place in Copa El País (Finals in bold): 1966 Salto Uruguay (Sal) - Progreso (Can) 6-4 Semifinals 1967 Wanderers (Pay) - Oriental (Riv) 3-4 Second Round Libertad (Mal) - Universal (San) 6-7 Third Round 1968 Amsterdam (Tac) - Central (San) L-W First Round Libertad (Mal) - Sarandí (Col) 2-3 Second Round 1969 Independiente (Fls) - Campana (San) 4-2 Second Round 1970 Figuritas (Rio) - Wanderers (Pay) W-L First Round San Eugenio (Art) - Bristol (Sor) 4-2 Third Round 1971 Estudiantil (Pay) - Nacional (FB) (Rio) 7-6 Second Round 1972 Atenas (Mal) - Artigas (Can) 6-7 First Round 1973 Plaza (C) (Col) - Nacional (San) 6-8 First Round San Eugenio (Art) - Peñarol (Riv) 3-2 Second Round Artigas (Cer) - Rausa (Mal) 5-4 Second Round 1974 Trece (Lav) - Artigas (Can) 5-4 First Round Atlético Florida (Fld) - Nacional (Pay) 5-4 Second Round 1975 18 de Julio (Rio) - Estudiantil (Pay) 5-4 Third Round - Coastal 18 de Julio (Rio) - Quilmes (Fld) 5-3 Semifinals Conventos (Cer) - Atenas (Mal) 2-4 Semifinals 1976 Deportivo Artigas (Sal) - Peñarol (Art) 4-3 First Round Deportivo Artigas (Sal) - Peñarol (Riv) 5-4 Second Round 18 de Julio (Rio) - Sportivo Yí (Dur) 3-5 Third Round Atenas (Mal) - Lavalleja (TyT) 4-2 Third Round Dep.Artigas (Sal) - Sportivo Yí (Dur) 4-5 Semifinals 1977 Independiente (Fls) - Río Negro (San) 4-1 First Round River Plate (Fld) - Sportivo Yí (Dur) 2-4 First Round Bella Vista (Pay) - River Plate (Sal) 3-2 Second Round Atenas (Mal) - Lavalleja (TyT) 4-2 Second Round 1978 Uruguayo (Col) - Asencio (Sor) 2-4 First Round - Coastal Plaza (Col) - Maracaná (San) 4-5 First Round - South Atl. Palermo won 3 penalty shootouts in 1987 and 2 more in 1989. Other Champions that had required two penalty shootouts: 18 de Julio (Fray Bentos, 1983), Porongos (1988) and Artigas (Melo, 1993). Champions that had to define from the eleven steps only once: Atenas (1975 and 1976), Universal (1967), Independiente (1969), San Eugenio (1970), Independencia (1984), Río Negro (1990), Fritsa (1991), Punta del Este (1992) and Porongos (1995). From 1987 to 1993 all the Champions needed at least one penalty shootout to win the title.
