In 1959 a nationwide league (now called Süper Lig) was introduced by the Turkish Football Federation. It was played under the name Millî Lig (National League) from 21 February to 14 June 1959. The first eight clubs of the 1958/59 İstanbul League and the first four clubs of the 1958/59 Ankara and İzmir Leagues qualified for the league, which was played in two groups on a double round-robin basis. The winners of the two groups competed for the championship title in a two-legged final. Fenerbahçe won the final 4-1 on aggregate and became champions of the first national league season. No clubs were promoted or relegated. The regional leagues got second level status after that year.
