There was no national club championship but the first major regional
league, the Northern League, was played. The Northern League became
a stepping stone (together with the the Central League and Southern
League, launched in later years) to the National League, which began
its life in 1970.
Chatham Cup, a New Zealand FA Cup style competition, was also played
(see below).
