There was no national club championship but the first major regional
league was launched.
The Northern League increased the level of play, in the northern part
of New Zealand, by bringing together the top teams from a number of
provinces and became a stepping stone (together with the the Central League
and Southern League, launched in later years) to the National League,
which began its life in 1970.
Chatham Cup, a New Zealand FA Cup style competition, was also played
(see below).
