The first Dutch match against Czechoslovakia was promising enough, an 8-1 win in a 1927 friendly in Amsterdam. However, the Czechs had introduced professional football two years earlier, and sent their amateur side, so that match never was an official international for them. When things got serious, at the 1938 World Cup in France, the Dutch amateurs put up a gallant enough fight, reaching extra time in spite of having two injured players on the pitch (substitutions not being allowed at the time) but eventually went down 0-3 to the 1934 World Cup finalists (still the record defeat for Oranje at any World Cup). Four decades later (which had seen the introduction of professional football in the Netherlands), the Dutch side had improved but the competitive record against Czechoslovakia did not: elimination at both the 1976 and 1980 European championship in bad-tempered matches.
Since the break-up of the federation between Czechs and Slovaks (FIFA considers the Czech Republic the official successor of Czechoslovakia, although the 1976 European championship winning side was dominated by Slovak players), the Dutch have won a couple of competitive matches (first thanks to a controversial penalty at the home Euro in 2000, later twice in qualifying for the 2006 World Cup), but the overall record remains clearly negative, if not quite as bad as that against Portugal. Probably most embarrassing is the record on neutral territory: in five matches, Oranje managed one useless draw and four losses, while being outscored three to one in the process.
