Netherlands-Portugal matches 1990-2019

Introduction

Portugal are the ultimate bête noire for the Netherlands, ahead even of Czechoslovakia and its official successor the Czech Republic. The atrocious record of Oranje against the Lusitans may partially be explained by the fact that the two did not meet before 1990 (apart from the 1966 World Cup and the 1984 European Championship, Portugal did not make much of an impression on the global football scene until then, and only became a regular fixture at international tournaments since the turn of the millennium) but there must be more to it. For whatever reason, the Dutch do not seem to be able to cope with the Portuguese way of playing the game – like with Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic, matches tend to be bad-tempered affairs, with the 2006 World Cup encounter the worst example (a record 16 yellow cards, 9 for Portugal and 7 for the Netherlands, with two players on each side receiving two and thus their marching orders).
