Dutch Antilles 1977/78

Kopa Antiano 1977/78
Curaçao 1976/77 | Bonaire 1977

Kopa Antiano 1977/78

NB: played Dec 10, 1977-Feb 25, 1978

The tournament was organised on a knock-out basis for the first time ever.

In an apparently confused understanding of rules in UEFA club competitions,
the away goal rule was introduced in a peculiar fashion:
in case two clubs obtain an equal number of points over both legs (i.e. if
both matches are drawn or both teams win one match), all (nominal) away
goals are counted twice, leading to Estrella being forced to play extra time
in their semifinal against R.C.A. in spite of having outscored them over 180
minutes in the same stadium, and inevitably losing out.

Participants:
Aruba: Estrella (champions), R.C.A. (runners-up)
Bonaire: Juventus (champions), Real Rincon (runners-up)
Curaçao: S.U.B.T. (champions), Jong Holland (runners-up)

NB: this was the first edition in which Bonaire were granted 2 entrants.

Round 1

First Legs [Dec 10]
S.U.B.T. 2-1 R.C.A.
Juventus 1-5 Jong Holland
Estrella 0-1 Real Rincon

Second Legs [Dec 15]
Jong Holland 3-0 Juventus
R.C.A. 1-0 S.U.B.T. [aggregate score 3-2]
Real Rincon 1-1 Estrella

NB: S.U.B.T. protested against their aggregate loss, as the away goal rule
      was introduced after the first legs only, but their protest was rejected;
Estrella protested against an ineligible player of Real Rincon, and were
successful; thus Real Rincon joined Juventus and S.U.B.T. in the losers
round while R.C.A., Jong Holland and Estrella progressed to the semifinals.

3-3 thanks to R.C.A. away goal counting double,
