Note that this list includes all clubs mentioned in this document, including a
foreign one, but is not necessarily exhaustive.
The short versions of the names on the left hand side are used in this
document; an additional indication of the home town is only included if
a homonymous club from another town appears in the document as well.
The full names on the right hand side appeared at least once in contemporary
publications (usually the "Nederlandsche Sport") but for most clubs other
versions appeared as well: in particular, the words "voetbal" and "football"
as well as "vereeniging" and "club" were often interchanged, sometimes
apparently at random, and while nearly all early Dutch football clubs
originated from an older cricket club, the "cricket" part was not always
included in the name.
Additional information is most welcome.
The eleven underlined clubs were founding members of the N.V.A.B.
on Dec 8, 1889; there was a twelfth founding member,
the Scheveningsche Wielerbaan, but this was not a football club
but the entity exploiting the (outdoor) cycling track in Scheveningen, an
accommodation used for football matches on a number of occasions around 1890,
including the first ever Eerste Klasse match between H.V.V. and H.F.C.
on Oct 19, 1890.
All clubs in italics were members of the N.V.A.B. at least at some point
during the season.

[2] Founded on Jun 20, 1889. [3] In the issue of the "Nederlandsche Sport" of Nov 2, 1889, the merger of football club Apeldoornsche F.C. and cricket club Robur et Velocitas into the Apeldoornsche Cricket- en Footballvereeniging "Robur et Velocitas" was announced. [4] Prinses Wilhelmina and E.F.C. merged on Oct 10, 1888. [5] In the issue of the "Nederlandsche Sport" of Sep 28, 1889, the combination of the football sides of the cricket clubs H.C.C. (Haagsche Cricket Club) and Olympia as "Haagsche Voetbal Club" on Sep 20, 1889, was announced, thus repeating the formation of the "'s-Gravenhaagsche Football-Club" in the previous season; later during the season, this combined side increasingly was referred to as H.V.V. (Haagsche Voetbal Vereeniging) instead of H.V.C.; in the overview of matches below, we will use that variant exclusively, as is customary, in spite of the fact that it was not always used at the time. [6] Founded on Sep 3, 1889 as split-off from Concordia. [7] Founded on Oct 25, 1889 as football section of the Utrechtsche Cricket-club "Hercules" (founded Apr 22, 1882). [8] Founded on Oct 4, 1889.
On Nov 17, 1889, a meeting to establish the "Nederlandsche Voetbalbond" was held in café "Neuf", in Haarlem. It was attended by fifteen men: W. Mulier (H.F.C., acting as president), M. Weinthal, P. Drooglever Fortuijn (both Concordia), H. Bijstra (D.F.C.), H. Westerveld, A. van Walchren, W. Bok (all H.F.C.), H. Burkens, Vollmer (both Excelsior H.), H.E.P. Coops (H.V.V.), J. Boer (representing both Olympia and Rotterdam), Herman Gorter (A.S.C.), Van Hasselt (R.A.P.), H. Rust and Harthoorn (both V.V.A.).
This meeting discussed a Dutch translation of the "Laws of the Game", the inclusion (or not) of athletics, membership fees for the clubs, the number of board members (seven) and regulations for "Bondswedstrijden" (following the suggestions of Noppen and Weinthal in July 1888); finally it decided to reconvene on Dec 8 in Den Haag.
The translation of the "Laws of the Game" as well as a draft regulation for "De Nederlandsche Voetbal- en Athletische Bond", which included the intended set-up for the "Bondswedstrijden", were then published in the Nov 23 issue of the "Nederlandsche Sport".
That second meeting, on Dec 8, 1889 in café "Central", Den Haag, was attended by sixteen people: W. Mulier (H.F.C., acting as president), H. Bijstra, E. Versteghe (both D.F.C.), P. Drooglever Fortuijn (Concordia), Van Goor, Wilton (both Rotterdam), Burkens, Vollmer (both Excelsior H.), C. Nolet, H. Isbrücker (both H.V.V.), Vaes, Van de Ven (both Olympia), Van der Waarden (R.A.P.), H. Rust, Harthoorn (both V.V.A.) and M. Weinthal. In addition, Go Ahead (Wageningen) had sent a letter joining the federation. This meeting, at which the seven board members were chosen, is taken to have been the official foundation of the N.V.A.B.
At a board meeting on Feb 9, 1890 at Wagenstraat 70, Den Haag, which was attended by six board members: W. Mulier, C. Nolet, Harthoorn, Bijstra, Burkens and Van der Waarden (Drooglever Fortuijn had missed his train), a decision was taken on the Eerste Klasse clubs for the 1889/90 season; the following six were selected: R.A.P., V.V.A., H.F.C., Excelsior H., H.V.V., and Concordia – coincidentally, or not, these were, apart from D.F.C., exactly all clubs represented in the board. The matches among these clubs were to count for the standings (het rangcijfer), with a win giving two points and a draw one. In addition, it was decided that if a Tweede Klasse club (that is, any other N.V.A.B. member club) would twice draw against an Eerste Klasse club or win once, that club would also become a member of the Eerste Klasse.

NB: at this point, a correspondent of the "Nederlandsche Sport" summarised the results among the first teams of the western clubs so far in the following fairly absurd "standings", published in the Dec 21 issue (clubs ranked on points/game ratio; goals were not listed but added here for the sake of completeness): 1.R.A.P. NB: after the N.V.A.B. board meeting on Feb 8, 1890, which had determined six Eerste Klasse clubs, the following standings based on the matches between those clubs was published in the "Nederlandsche Sport" on Feb 15 (clubs ranked on points only; again, goals were not listed but are added here for the sake of completeness): 1.R.A.P. (and lost 1-3 against Concordia), had once avoided a loss. (Amsterdam) 5 0 2 3 2- 8 2 [!] note that splitting Concordia's record into matches played in 1889 and those played in 1890 makes no difference whatsoever to the order; in 1889 they obtained 3 points from 3 matches (goal record 4-5), in 1890 3 points from 4 matches (goal record 1-2); with each of these records as well as with their sum they would be ranked fifth. This is sometimes taken as the standings of an (unfinished) league, but the new N.V.A.B. had decided to start its first official competition in the 1890/91 season; while the above seven clubs had been established as belonging to the Eerste Klasse, no championship, official or otherwise, was contested in 1889/90, in spite of the fact that the correspondent of the "Nederlandsche Sport" (H.E.P. Coops) decided to proclaim H.F.C. as the champions. This proclamation should be seen in the same light as the attempt to extract champions from the final match of the 1887/88 season, between V.V.A. and H.F.C., which only failed because it ended goalless: an informal tentative to identify the strongest club in the country. If, anachronistically, one would eliminate, according to the rules valid for the 1892/93 season, the results of those clubs who did not manage to play all other clubs at least once (i.e. Excelsior and V.V.A.), the table would look as follows (note how the would be champions from Haarlem are the only club with a negative goal record): 1.Olympia (Rotterdam) 7 2 4 1 6- 6 8 2.H.V.V. (Den Haag) 7 1 5 1 9- 6 7 3.R.A.P. (Amsterdam) 7 3 1 3 6- 5 7 4.H.F.C. (Haarlem) 6 2 2 2 7-11 6 5.Concordia (Rotterdam) 5 1 2 2 4- 4 4 Had an Eerste Klasse competition (which did not exist) been completed between those five clubs, they might (if Olympia had lost to H.F.C., H.F.C. had lost to Concordia, and the other matches had been drawn) all have finished on eight points! Also, all of them might, with a suitable set of results in the four unplayed matches, have finished alone in first place (i.e. with more points than all other clubs). In October 1889 the Antwerp Football Club invited Concordia to play two matches, one in both Antwerpen and Rotterdam, on dates to be agreed upon. After several attempts to arrange these matches had miscarried, eventually one match was played towards the end of the season in Breda, roughly equidistant from both cities. Unfortunately, the Belgian club, which consisted mostly of Britons, showed up with only eight players.
