NB: this cup started as a trophy from the then governor of Nyasaland, Sir Robert
Armitage, in 1957 to the Nyasaland African Football Association (NAFA) and
probably was named after him. In 1964 the throphy was called Kamuzu Cup in
honour of 'Founder of the Nation' Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda.
It was first played as an interprovincial (sind 1963 interregional) tournament
amongst the Southern, Central and Northern Provinces (c.q. Regions) in a
round robin (mini-league) system. In 1957 it was held in Lilongwe and in 1958
in Mzuzu, both times in the Christmas period. In 1962, the cup (knock-out)
system was introduced and the Southern Province (later Region) was allowed to
enter two sides, a southern and a northern section (also called A and B).
Since 1974 the cup is played by club teams.
