After the season, the Croatian clubs (Dinamo Zagreb, Hajduk Split, NK Osijek, NK Rijeka, and newly promoted NK Zagreb) and the Slovenian side Olimpija Ljubljana left the Yugoslav federation and joined own leagues. Therefore no teams were relegated, and apart from Vardar Skopje (2nd behind NK Zagreb in the 2nd division), also OFK Beograd (3rd), Sutjeska Niksic (4th) and Pelister Bitola (6th) were given a place in the first division 1991/92.
