In April 1941, Germany and Italy founded NDH (Independent State of Croatia). Some of the coastal territories of Croatia were completely occupied by Italians. In the city of Split club Hajduk refused to change name to AC Spalato and to play in the Italian League. Instead, the players all joined the partisan army to fight against the regime. In the spring of 1944, Hajduk's players managed to escape from occupied Split to the free island of Vis, where they were organized as a team of Yugoslav National Army (NOVJ and JNA).
