South East Asian Tour of Grazer SC 1934

The Grazer Sportclub (G.S.C.) were the first European side to visit the Dutch East Indies. At the time, they were one of the leading clubs in Styria (Steiermark), then the strongest Austrian football region after Vienna, and would win the Styrian league in the 1934/35 season.
The club had first requested the N.I.V.B. to organise a tour for them through the Dutch East Indies in 1931, but as the federation at the time was negotiating with the Dutch F.A. for a tour of the Dutch national team, that request was denied at a meeting of the board on 28 March 1931 in Soekaboemi.
The trip was financially supported by cigarette manufacturers Faroka, based in Malang, where the Austrian tourists lost their only match in the Dutch East Indies; their second loss, in the final match in Colombo, came in an unscheduled encounter in which the team was severely handicapped by injuries to key players incurred in their previous match in Singapore against an apparently over-zealous local city selection (captain and centre half Kastrun could not play, neither could centre forward Buchta, and 'keeper Hans Allmer only entered as a field player due to a broken thumb).
Two years after the G.S.C., their Viennese namesakes became the first professional club to tour the Dutch East Indies.
Matches in the Dutch East Indies

on Java

NB: XIs by the hosts refer to the "Bondselftal" of the local football
federation, e.g. the V.B.O. for Batavia and the S.V.B. (Soerabajasche
Voetbalbond) for Soerabaja; club teams playing Grazer SC tended to
be the 1933/34 champions of their federation (Hercules for Batavia,
Tiong Hoa for Soerabaja, Sidolig for Bandoeng; together with the
V.B.O. XI in the final match on Java these tended to be the most
difficult opponents for the guests); G.S.C. also played against two
Java selections (one from the Chinese association H.N.V.B., one from
the Dutch association N.I.V.B.) and a combined team from the Solo
and Djokjakarta federations playing as Vorstenlanden-combinatie.

Squad Grazer SC

Players (14):
first eleven:
  Hans Allmer (goal keeper)
  Karl Allmer (left back)
  Othmar Stanek (right back)
  Othmar Kahr (left half)
  Ferdinand Kastrun (captain, centre half)
  Johann "Hans" Angerer (right half)
Hubert Eberhard (outside left) [or Franz Goissnigg?]
  Hubert Matejka (inside left)
  Johann "Hans" Buchta (centre forward)
  Fritz Dorner (inside right)
  Fritz Stanek (outside right)
reserves:
  Franz Engelbogen (forward)
  Walter Rudorfer (half and forward)
  Rudolf Fischerauer (half and back)

NB: a former article at the Grazer SC site, which since disappeared but is still
available thanks to the Wayback Machine, did not list Eberhard but instead
included Franz Goissnigg; however, all match reports from the newspapers in
the Dutch East Indies and Singapore do not mention Goissnigg at any occasion,
but list Hubert Eberhard as outside left in nearly all matches; this would
appear to be a very unlikely mistake to have been made by the (mostly native
Dutch) reporters, generally able to communicate in German although guilty of
a few occasional spelling errors (e.g. Buchla, Motheya, Staneck).

Officials (2):
Manager: Alexander Niederl
Treasurer: Wilhelm Kurej

Malang 'keeper into Dutch was Mo Hien; later he became known as
Mo Heng (presumably because of transcription into English) and
played for the Dutch East Indies at the 1938 World Cup.
The inside left is listed as Eberhard in local newspapers but as
