Six of the original Philippines squad were injured and had to be replaced by junior division players, all college students aged 16 to 18. Prior to the Games they had beaten a British/Spanish selection 2-0 in Manila, They were coached by Manuel Amechazurra, Philippino born who 20 years earlier had played for Barcelona in Spain.
China included their 'boy wonder' Lee Wai Tong, who was not yet 18, from South China 'B' team (that is to say the South China Third team). His prolific goalscoring earned him a place on the team and marked the start of an illustrious career which lasted for the next twenty years, and he was recognised as the greatest Asian player of the period. Born in Tai Hang village in British Hong Kong in 1905, Lee was called up by China’s national team at the age of 18 and notched up at least 1,260 goals during his 25-year playing career. As captain of China, his team would go on a 13-year unbeaten run in competitive games from 1923 to 1936.
The pitch was muddy following heavy rain the previous day, Despite heroics from Philippines goalie Quintana China led 2-0, the Filipino team lost control and play became increasingly more violent. Twenty-nine minutes into the second half a fight broke out between Ng Kam Chuen and Estava, the rest of the players joined in leading to a full-scale battle and members of the crowd were also involved. The police managed to establish order and after mediatation the two sides agreed to finish the game.
