The match was kicked off in the rain. In the first half, Japan fought evenly with the Philippines. In the 7th minute, Goto scored the first goal and they seemed to have made a good start. However, the Philippines equalized and the game was quite even and the first half ended 1-1. In the second half, Japan playing against the wind could not keep up with the speed and accurate passes of the Philippines and lost 1-3.

Legendary China captain Tong Fuk Cheong had left to study in the US whilst Nan Hua captain Cheung Wing Hon was ill and ordered to rest, sadly he deteriorated and died 3 years later aged only 29. Kwok Po Kan and Tin Yuk On were unavailable due to business duties whilst Feng Tai also had to withdraw from the squad at the last minute. The ground was packed an hour before the 3:20 p.m. opening ceremony and the kick-off fifty minutes later. No sooner had the game begun when play was held up after 15 minutes due to spectators encroaching the pitch and Boy Scouts had to maintain order. The game ebbed from end to end but remained scoreless at half-time.
Seven minutes into the second period Ip Kau-Ko scored and the crowd erupted spurred on by a military band who played all through the half. The score remained 1-0 until the end when the crowd, at last, got onto the field and carried the winning teams players off as the band played a triumphant march.
 1- 6-1921 China             4-0 Japan
             [Ip Kau-Ko 15, Kam Fook 2-0, Wong Pak-Chung 33, Au Kit-Sang 49;
              half-time: 2-0]
  [China: Lau Hing-Cheung; Hui Shing-Iu, Cheung Wing-Sing, Leung Yuk-Tong (c),
     Leung Tai-Fong, Lai Yuk-Tat; Ip Kau-Ko, Pang Kam-Wing, Wong Pak-Chung,
     Au Kit-Sang, Kam Fook;
   Japan: Yoshisuke Shimizu; Hideomi Hoshino, Katsumi Onita; Yuzuru 'Ken' Nozu,
     Eibun Moriya, Teijiro Mori; Jun Ohashi, Kohei Ando, Hitoshi Sasaki,
     Morotane Goto, Minoru Takahashi (c)]
Japan coach Hitoshi Sasaki replaced Sunao Goto at centre-forward and they started brightly. The Chinese gradually began to settle and after 15 minutes Kam Fook and Wong Pak-Chung combined to set up Ip Kau-Ko for the first goal. Kam Fook and Wong Pak-Chung again united and the former scored a second Chinese goal.
Japan again started well, but after a quarter of an hour, Au Kit-Sang netted with a free kick. After the third goal, both sides became more physical and the referee was kept busy. Pang Kam-Wing and Hitoshi Sasaki were injured and had to leave the field, then Wong Pak-Chung kicked 'Ken' Nozu and was sent-off, China added a fourth and took first place.
The unfamiliar environment had a considerable effect on the Japanese. The grass and slightly larger pitchs that they didn't have in Japan, confused the players. In addition, because it was the first expedition, unseasonable weather, unfamiliar food, and even training caused a series of illnesses. Most of them were forced to play in poor physical condition.
