Before the first World War, Denmark and the Netherlands were arguably the two strongest national teams on the continent, securing the silver and bronze medals at the 1908 and 1912 Olympics behind the British (in fact, English) amateurs; the first head-to-head encounter was the 1912 Olympic semi-final, with Denmark securing a convincing win, albeit after having had a much easier path to that semi-final – a single match, in which they had easily thrashed Norway 7-0, as opposed to the two close encounters the Dutch had played against hosts Sweden (4-3 after extra time) and Austria (3-1).
After the Great War, both countries remained true to the amateur ideal, and so met frequently in friendly matches until the early sixties. In later years, the Danish Dynamite team of the mid-eighties gained much sympathy in the Netherlands, also because many players of that firserholdet (had) plied their club trade with Ajax, PSV or Feyenoord. Some of this sympathy may have been lost when the two countries again met in the semi-final of a major tournament, the 1992 European Championship, surprisingly won by Denmark, who had only entered as replacements for politically banned Yugoslavia.
The match on March 7, 1953, which does not count as an official international for Denmark, was a benefit match for the victims of the Watersnoodramp five weeks before. The net profit was about 200,000 guilders, but its impact was dwarfed by a match five days later in Paris between the French national side and a selection of Dutch professionals abroad (mainly in France). The financial gain of that match was little more than half of that of the Denmark match but the sensational 2-1 win by the Dutch professionals, and the obvious gap in playing quality between their team (of players who had never played together) and the official Dutch side triggered the introduction of professional football in the Netherlands just one year later.
