Football had been played on Grand Cayman at the Town Hall Field in West Bay
since the 1950s, with as most prominent club West Bay United. In the second half
of the sixties, there were frequent matches against crews from visiting ships
(e.g. HMS "Tiger" in March 1966, HMS "Mohawk" in both October 1967 and November 1969)
and between school teams (e.g. between the Secondary Grammar School and the
Triple C School on 23 September 1966, described as "the first football match of
the season", in George Town, won 3-2 by the Grammar School).
In December 1969, Jamaican club side Real Mona visited Cayman, playing three matches,
and in spring 1970 the George Town Football Team played friendly matches on an almost
weekly basis, against sides from West Bay and a selection of expats.
Possibly triggered by all that activity, the Cayman Islands Football Association came into being. Its foundation was announced in the Caymanian Weekly issue of 6 August 1970 (although CIFA, on its website, antedates its own foundation, apparently erroneously, to 1966); the issue of 12 August 1971 reported that CIFA had been elected to the Jamaica Football Federation and to CONTECOF (sic – surely, CONCACAF was meant, although the CIFA page states it only became affiliated to CONCACAF in 1990; presumably there was an interruption of its membership).
The new federation immediately started with organising competitions, first a League Cup, played between August and October 1970 as prelude to the first ever league season.
