Koeman Brothers

The brother pair of Erwin and Ronald Koeman played together for the Dutch national team (for which their father Martin also once made an appearance) when it won its only major international prize to date, the 1988 European championship. The two played together in four of the five matches in that tournament in West Germany, and all four matches were won.

Just a month before, the two brothers had both won a major club trophy, and that with different clubs: after Erwin Koeman had lifted the European Cup Winners' Cup with rank outsiders and European debutants KV Mechelen from Belgium by beating Ajax in the final, Ronald did one better by lifting the Champions' Cup with PSV, defeating Benfica in the final in Stuttgart. Later Ronald would become the second player ever (after Miodrag Belodedici) to win the major European cup prize with two different teams, claiming the first ever European Champions' League win with Barcelona in 1992.

Together the two brothers obtained 109 Dutch caps (Ronald 78, Erwin 31), scoring 16 goals (Ronald 14, Erwin 2). Below we list all 26 matches of the Dutch national team in which both brothers played. It is of interest to note that the Dutch team had a better average performance in matches in which both played than in matches in which only one of the two (regardless whether Erwin or Ronald) made an appearance.
