The CPSL started in 1998 as an attempt to re-establish professional soccer in Canada in a Canadian-based league. It started mainly in the Toronto area for its first season and expanded to other regions in 2000. In 1999, the league changed its name from the Canadian Professional Soccer League to the Canadian Premier Soccer League. The CPSL was superceded by the Canadian Soccer League in 2006.
