Team Standings and Playoff results The second American Soccer league was always a very low-key league, toiling without recognition outside of the regional areas in which it played. Crowds usually numbered from 1,000 - 3,000. But this also is the longest running professional league in U. S. history. For much of its history, the league concentrated on the New England - New York - New Jersey - Philadelphia area, but in the early 1970's, it expanded into the Midwest, and then in the late 1970's, during the boom years of the NASL, it opened a division along the west coast. This ambitious plan proved too expensive for a league with such tenuous finances, and the league dwindled until its last season in 1983. The league folded, but a number of teams joined the newly formed United Soccer League which played through 1985. Many thanks to Mark Pollak for providing much of the information from 1933-1973, and to Colin Jose and Roger Allaway for providing key supplemental material. Mark obtained this information through a variety of sources, including media guides and press releases of the ASL and USSF, the Philadelphia Bulletin Almanacs for various years, and newspaper box scores and articles. Information for 1974-1983 comes from newspaper articles, the Bill Graham guides, ASL media guides and USSFA guides. Point scoring system (1934-1975): 2 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, 0 points for a loss. Point Scoring System (1976-1982): 5 points for a regulation win, 2 points for a tie, 0 points for a regulation loss, and 1 point for each goal scored up to 3 per game. Point scoring system (1983): 5 points for a win, 2 points for an overtime or shootout loss (included among bonus points), 0 points for a loss, and 1 point for each goal scored up to 3 per game. 1933/34 G W T L GF GA Pts Kearny Irish 25 15 6 4 60 35 36 New York Americans 23 14 4 5 59 34 32 Kearny Scots 25 11 3 11 58 53 25 New York Brookhattan 24 8 3 13 45 51 19 Brooklyn Celtic 22 7 2 13 37 47 16 Newark Germans 19 7 1 11 32 49 15 Brooklyn Hispano 17 6 2 9 26 45 14 Philadelphia German-American 13 5 2 6 27 28 12 Brooklyn Celtic assumed the 4-2-6 record of Brooklyn F.
