Representative matches of the Western FA (Canada) and the American FA (United States)

In the late 19th century the Western FA of Ontario and the American FA (based at Newark) played various representative matches, many of which are listed below. The extent to which some of these matches could be considered as internationals is left to the reader to consider - the purpose of this file is only to collate information rather than to assert a status for each match. These matches were played many years before the foundation of FIFA, and before the foundation of the current FIFA-affiliated football associations of Canada and the United States.

For a period towards the end of the 20th century, the two matches on 28-Nov-1885 and 25-Nov-1886 (and also an 1888 match vs a Scotland XI) were counted as full internationals by the modern Canada Soccer Association, following research by Colin Jose, but those matches have since been expunged from the CSA's official record.

The Western FA's tour of the United Kingdom in 1888 and the tour of a combined Western FA and New England League team to the United Kingdom in 1891 have both been covered extensively by Colin Jose, and this work is not duplicated here; instead, external hyperlinks are given below.

Where available, lineups are given below for matches involving a WFA or AFA representative team.
