The Spanish Civil War began in Summer of 1936. During the season 1936/37 Spain was divided into two parts, without relation between them. So, playing the Spanish Liga was absolutely impossible. In the Republican part, some regions maintained their tournaments: the Championship of Catalonia and the Championship of Levante (played by teams from Valencia and Murcia). During the dates when Spanish Liga had been supposed to be played, the Liga del Mediterráneo was organized. It was to be played by the six teams of both championships, but as only four teams from Levante inscribed (Hércules FC, Murcia FC and Cartagena FC withdrew, because their towns were bombarded), the Catalan presence was also reduced to four (thereby, CS Sabadell and FC Badalona were out). In the end, the tournament was played by: - the top four of the Campionat de Catalunya 1937: CE Espanyol, FC Barcelona, Girona FC, Granollers EC - four Valencian teams from the Campeonato Levante: Valencia FC (champion), Levante FC, Gimnástico FC and Athletic Castellón (the latter inscribed to complete 8 teams) Results Bar Esp Gir Val Lev Gim Gra Cas FC Barcelona 2-0 0-0 3-2 2-1 5-1 2-0 3-0 CE Espanyol 1-1 6-3 0-2 2-0 1-0 3-0 3-0 Girona FC 2-0 2-2 4-0 1-0 2-0 4-1 3-0 Valencia FC 3-3 4-3 2-1 0-1 4-0 6-0 2-1 Levante FC 3-3 2-2 3-1 3-3 2-2 7-0 0-0 Gimnástico FC 1-1 2-3 1-1 2-1 1-6 2-1 3-0 Granollers EC 1-2 2-3 2-2 2-2 1-1 1-0 4-0 Athletic Castellón 0-0 0-1 1-1 0-1 0-1 3-3 2-2 Table 1.FC Barcelona 14 7 6 1 27-15 20 2.CE Espanyol (Barcelona) 14 8 3 3 30-20 19 3.Girona FC 14 6 5 3 27-18 17 4.Valencia FC 14 7 3 4 32-23 17 5.Levante FC (Valencia) 14 5 6 3 30-18 16 6.Gimnástico FC (Valencia) 14 3 4 7 18-31 10 7.Granollers EC 14 2 4 8 17-36 8 8.Athletic Castellón 14 0 5 9 7-27 5 Champion: FC Barcelona Top five qualify to Copa de España Libre 1937.
