The teams that finished second and third, Real Zaragoza, CD Sabadell, UD Salamanca and UD Las Palmas, played a promotion/relegation league with the teams that finished 13th and 14th in the first division, CD Málaga and Real Murcia, won by UD Las Palmas, Real Zaragoza finishing second. The teams that finished second and third, CD Logroñés, Ferrol, Mestalla and CD Alcoyano, played a promotion/relegation league with the teams that finished 13th and 14th in the first division, Sporting de Gijón and Racing Santander, won by Mestalla, Sporting de Gijón finishing second. Sporting de Gijón thereby remained in the first division. Mestalla renounced the promotion for being the affiliated team of Valencia CF, thereby allowing Racing Santander, who had finished third in the promotion/relegation league, to remain in the first division.
