Although there were some early variants, for most of the first-half of the 20th century a rampant red lion on a yellow background with a red border was used. It was very similar to the Monarch's flag used in Scotland. In 1952 the SFA was asked to create a new badge to avoid confusion between them. The lion remained and became the centrepiece of the design but was now surrounded by eleven thistles. Although the badge has been modified over the years that central feature continues to this day. Scotland and England shared the home title.
