Ligue Réunionnaise de Football was founded on March 9th 1956, after a meeting held on February 19th, on basis of Fédération Sportive Réunionnaise (founded March 9th 1930) contested by many clubs. The 15 clubs at the meeting of February 19th can be considered as ligue's founders: Bourbon Club, Dyonisienne, La Franco, Les Juniors Dionysiens, Lancastel, JS Montagnarde, Patriote, Racing, Royal Star, ASPTT (all from St Denis), Sainte Lousienne (from St Louis), Saint Pierroise (from St Pierre), Juniors St Paulois, Charles de Foucauld (from St Paul) and Indépendante (from Le Port). Eventually, 41 societies were affiliated at the end of March; 13 entered the 1931 league.
The first division was called Division d'Honneur.
L'Olympique (from St Denis) foreseen in Division d'Honneur declined.
A barrage between Charles de Foucauld and Excelsior was played on
April 15th. Charles de Foucauld won 7-1. It's the very first official
match organized by new LRF.
The first match of Division d'Honneur was played April 22nd.
Points system: 2 points for win, 1 for Draw, 0 for loss.
