Between 1974 to 1990, clubs from French Polynesia (mainly Tahiti) and New Caledonia played this tournament to determine the Pacific entrants in the (seventh round of the) Coupe de France (French Cup). Until obtaining independence as Vanuatu in 1980, also clubs from the New Hebrides entered at least occasionally.
