The league is scheduled to start again in November, but there is an
element of doubt over sponsorship. Up until three or so years ago,
Soccer New Zealand was sponsored by a local branch of a cigarette
company. When the law changed to prohibit cigarette advertising, part
of the deal was that a body called the Health Sponsorship Council (using
the name "Smokefree") would continue to provide sponsorship to those
codes that were affected. This transitional arrangement runs out this
year, so Soccer New Zealand (what a terrible name!) has to find a new
sponsor. Otherwise the league may not go ahead. However, it is likely
that someone will pick up the slack, as the league has had good media
coverage, plus a half hour highlights programme every Sunday on TV.
