There was no national club championship but teams in the
three regional leagues (Northern League, Central League
and Southern League) competed for places in the newly
created National League, which was launched in 1970.
Chatham Cup, a New Zealand FA Cup style competition, was also played
(see below).

Participants: Masterton Utd (9th), Upper Hutt Utd (10th),
Lower Hutt City (Wellington), Moturoa (Taranaki), Napier City

Winners to be promoted: Masterton United and Lower Hutt City
However, due to league reconstruction, Upper Hutt United,
Napier City and Wanganui Athletic were also allowed to participate.
The only team, from the play-offs, not to play in the second division
in 1970 was Moturoa - their place went to Christian Youth FC (Wellington).
In addition to the Central League, a number of smaller
regional leagues existed in this part of the country.
