The team that participated in the Merdeka Tournament was at the time considered to be a New Zealand 'B' team. Allan Jones (selected as a coach solely for this tournament) selected ten players from the New Zealand Youth team and seven "senior" players. The aim was to give the young players experience of international football prior to Youth World Cup qualifiers. However, at some later stage the Merdeka Tournament matches have been reclassified and they are part of the official list as compiled by Barry Smith for "An Association with Soccer". Note that not everybody in New Zealand regards those matches as full internationals. Essentially, the problem is that there is no consensus on what a “full international” is, or is not, for New Zealand. 252.
