In general, the Netherlands have an outstanding record against the CONMEBOL member federations. Statistically, the best is that against Argentina, who only defeated the Netherlands once in ten matches, and that only after extra time. Sadly, that one match was the final of the 1978 World Cup hosted by the Argentine junta. The last two World Cup meetings, at the semifinal stage of the 2014 edition and at the quarterfinal stage in 2022, were both drawn after extra time but saw Argentina progress after a penalty shoot-out, whereas the three World Cup meetings in Europe either saw Oranje eliminate the Albiceleste (in 1974 thanks to a 4-0 rout in a downpour, in 1998 thanks to a wonderful goal by the inimitable Dennis Bergkamp) or saw a dead rubber end in an insipid draw as both had already qualified from the group stage (2006).
The Dutch record against Brazil is dead even, irrespective of venue (Brazil, the Netherlands or neutral); if Brazil still lead the overall head-to-head by a single goal that is due to the first meeting at the 1952 Olympics where the Dutch amateurs were stuffed 5-1. At World Cup tournaments, both eliminated the other twice (the Dutch winning what was effectively a semifinal in 1974 and a quarterfinal in 2010; the Seleção in a quarterfinal in 1994 and a semifinal in 1998, if only after a penalty shoot-out); the last encounter saw Oranje winning the third place match at Brazil's home World Cup.
Uruguay is the only South American country with a winning record against the Dutch, thanks to two meetings at Olympic Games in the twenties. The 1924 semifinal was the only match in which Uruguay were seriously challenged by European opposition at either of those two Olympics – they required a penalty present to win it. The two times Oranje and the Charrúas met at a World Cup, the Europeans emerged victorious, in a 1974 group match and a semifinal in 2010.
None of the other seven CONMEBOL member federations ever managed a win against the Netherlands. Bolivia and Venezuela (traditionally the two weakest national teams in the region) are yet to play Oranje, but all others had one or more tries, two at World Cups staged in South America (Peru managing a 0-0 draw in Argentina 1978, Chile losing 0-2 in Brazil 2014), and one at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar (Ecuador drawing 1-1) but usually in friendlies played in the Netherlands.
All matches listed are friendlies unless otherwise stated.
