The Netherlands and Romania first met at the 1924 Paris Olympics, where Romania paid the price for inexperience against the three times bronze medalists. Two later Olympic encounters, in the qualifying tournament for the 1976 Olympics in Montréal, were easily won by Romania but only featured the Dutch amateur selection; they were never considered official by the Dutch but only removed from the list of official matches by Romania in 2007.
The majority of the meetings between the two was played after the turn of the millennium, and nearly all were competitive matches: four in World Cup qualifying (for the 2006 and 2014 final tournaments), all won by Oranje, and four for the 2008 European championship (two qualifiers, including the only win (to date) of the Tricolorii against the Netherlands, in the Black Sea port of Constanța, and at the final tournaments in Switzerland 2008 and Germany 2024, both won by the Dutch).
Partially due to the fact that the decade between 2005 and 2014 does not count among the best in Romania's football history, the overall record is surprisingly one-sided. Given that Romania have a more than respectable record against other traditional European powers such as England, Spain and the Soviet Union (and its official successor Russia), it is fair to say the Dutch are their worst bête noire.
