The Mitchell Shield and the Sutherland Shield were annual challenge matches played between the representative women's teams of the Orkney Islands and the Shetland Islands, each taking turns as host. The Mitchell Shield was played by the A-teams and the Sutherland Shield was played (infrequently) by the B-teams, typically over a single weekend.
The first match was played in 2006, after Marie Logan organised the first Orkney women's football team. Shetland had already fielded a women's team in the 2005 Island Games. The Mitchell Shield trophy itself was sponsored initially by Elizabeth Leslie of "The Hair Studio" in Kirkwall. The analogous match for men's teams, the Milne Cup, has been played since 1908.
The most recent contest for the Mitchell Shield was in 2014, although friendly matches between teams from Orkney and Shetland resumed from 2019, these are listed below.
