Martinez Shield

The shield was donated by Frederick Martinez, a merchant who operated in the West Indies.

It was originally competed for only once, as an inter-club athletics trophy in Trinidad in 1908, and was won by the Shamrock Club. Later, on the inauguration of the intercolonial football competition between Trinidad and British Guiana in 1923, the Shamrock Club donated the Martinez Shield to the Trinidad Amateur Football Association (T.A.F.A.), and the competition became known as the Martinez Shield. The competition started as an intercolonial tournament between Trinidad and British Guiana. The last three editions also included Barbados to form a triangular.

The British Guiana Football Association (B.G.F.A.) was based in Georgetown, Demerara, and its representative teams (which normally were composed of Georgetown-based players only) were sometimes referred to as "Demerara," particularly in the Trinidad press. Demerara was part of British Guiana, which had been created by the unification of Demerara-Essequibo and Berbice in 1831.
