This football tournament was part of a festival of sporting and cultural events staged annually in Kabul from 1974-1977 to commemorate the anniversary of the Republic of Afghanistan, which was founded on 17th July 1973 when President Mohammed Daoud seized power. President Daoud was killed on 28th April 1978 during a communist coup (the Saur Revolution) which established the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan.
The festival was referred to as "Jashn-e-Jamhouriat" (which translates to "Republic festival"), "Jashn-e-Kabul", or simply "Jashn" (also spelled Jashan, Jashen, Jassan, Jasson, etc). The football tournament was referred to in the "Kabul Times" newspaper as the "Jame-Jamhouriat Cup" (i.e. the Republic Day Cup), or simply the "Jamhouriat Cup" (Republic Cup).
The anniversary of the Saur Revolution was also commemorated with a similar "Jashn" festival, including a football tournament.
