Hungary and the Netherlands have one particular trauma
in common: losing a World Cup final to West Germany in spite
of being almost universally considered to have been the best
team of the relevant tournament.
The Netherlands did not play
Hungary very often during the heyday of Magyar football – no
matches at all against the Aranycsapat of the fifties
and only four competitive matches in the sixties, in which the
Hungarians easily dominated the Dutch in 1962 World Cup and
1968 European Nations Cup qualifying, in groups also including
East Germany.
Then there was a sudden flurry of matches in the mid-eighties,
in qualifying campaigns for the 1986 World Cup and 1988 European
Championship. Hungarian football had by then declined
considerably but the national side still managed to secure a
surprise 2-1 away win in Rotterdam which paved the way for
Hungary's last qualification for an international tournament
for thirty years (until the 2016 European Championship, by
which time the number of countries entering the final tournament
had tripled compared to the eighties).
After that win, the two countries met on nine occasions in a
period of nearly three decades (1985 to 2013), with
the Netherlands winning each and every encounter, before Hungary
finally managed a home draw in 2024. Only against
Cyprus, Luxembourg and
Wales Oranje managed similar series of successive
wins (9, 10 and 10 respectively, all three series running).
In the six meetings between 1990 and 2020, the Dutch ran up
a 34-7 goal record against the none too mighty Magyars.
