In 1962, Las Palmas U-18 won the Spanish Cup tournament in its age class. On that occasion, the F.L.P.F. (Football Federation of the Canary Islands) organized an international tournament in Las Palmas. It consisted of just one match, Las Palmas beating Lisboa 6-1. After a similar tournament in 1963, it was organized in 1964 by Jesús Gómez Rodríguez, president of the F.L.P.F., who gave it the name Torneo Internacional Juvenil Copa del Atlántico. Since then, it takes place in the winter, usually in January or February. All matches are played in the Old Insular Stadium in Las Palmas.
No tournament was organized between 1979 and 1989. Since 1989 only national teams play, and instead of Las Palmas, Spain U-18 represent the locals. The tournament is now played in the stadiums of Maspalomas, Vecindario, Gáldar and Las Palmas.
