Finland-Netherlands matches 1912-2011

Introduction

Apart from three friendlies around 1950, when Dutch football was at its lowest ebb yet (the three matches in question saw 18 goals, split evenly between the two countries), the Netherlands and Finland have only met in competitive matches.
The first of these was the bronze medal match at the Stockholm Olympics in 1912. The Finns were fresh from wins over Italy and Russia and a creditable 0-4 semifinal defeat against Great Britain, but the Dutch chalked up a record win, Jan Vos (who played club football with U.V.V. at the Dutch second level) scoring 5 goals (still a record, later equalled by three other players) in a 9-0 thrashing (a score Oranje did not equal for six decades, Norway suffering the same scoreline in 1972, and did not improve upon for nearly a century, San Marino being annihilated 11-0 in 2011; it also was Finland's record loss until a war-time 0-13 against Germany in Leipzig; since then they have suffered a few more double digit defeats, including two against the former Soviet Union).

The last ten encounters all were qualifying matches (six for the European championship and four for the World Cup), in which Finland managed one home draw in 1991, but lost the other nine.
