A = 1st level (Mestaruussarja 1930-1989, Veikkausliiga from 1990)
B = 2nd level (Division Two 1936-1972, Division One from 1973)
C = 3rd level (Division Two from 1973)
In Finland the clubs are usually known by abbreviations, which in most cases consist of one or two letters from the beginning of each word of the full name. Here the club names are given in the form [abbreviation] [hometown]. Where not apparent from the abbreviation, the full name is mentioned in parentheses.
For each club, there are listed the number of seasons and the periods spent in each division. If a club has changed name, all their records are listed under the current name (or under the best known name, if the club does not exist anymore). This does not apply to the name changes, in which the successor club can be considered a completely different organization from the predecessor club, e.g. in case of mergers.
Since the late 1980s, many clubs have added a foreign (FC, AC, SC, etc.) prefix or postfix to their official name. This kind of name changes are completely ignored here.
Some clubs, who changed name or were merged, have later been re-founded (typically they continued in the divisional place of the reserve team). The records of the new club are added to those of the original club.
The clubs are sorted first by hometown, then by abbreviation, using the Finnish/Swedish alphabetical order (Z is followed by Å, Ä and Ö).
